  • Technical Question 1.8 MAF and injectors

So I know bigger MAF = decreased reading in flow of air since there is less drag and resistance. But since the ecu thinks its still the stock maf housing. The car will respond to the lower velocity by using a lower injector duty cycle as it thinks it's getting less air, so it needs less fuel.

So if I wanted to increase the stock 1.8t MAF housing to a bigger TT/VR6 3" O.D., 2.75" I.D. Knowing that the injectors open less and that means less fuel going into the engine. You would need to match proportionally larger injectors to make up for this difference in velocity. The question is how big injectors would I have to use to adapt so that I don't run lean to compensate with the ecu.

    Found it!
"380cc injectors @ 4bar on a vr maf... the VR maf advances all the maps by an easy 7* to call safe. So you need to pull back 7* in timing to get the timing curve back to like it was wrote in the map."

    Thanks for looking!

I think this will be hit and miss unless you are getting custom programming or engine management to go with it.

Yeah I looked into the engine management and since I currently have revo, I can purchase a sps controller and use lemmiwinks.

Why live tomorrow when you're just going to die in the end anyway ? The answer to your question is the same reason why one would tinker with their engines. Because it is my car I can and I like to experiment. If einstein never tried he never would have gotten anywhere. Cheers bud.

Re: Technical Question 1.8 MAF and injectors

I get tinkering with engines, I do it myself, but I'm wondering why start with the MAF? If I remember correctly, even stage 2 or stage 3+ 1.8t engines run the stock MAF. That would seem to me that it's not a source of restriction. I'm just wondering why put out so much effort for no or minimal gains?

As to why live for tomorrow when you're just going to die in the end anyway, that's kind of morbid, don't you think? Especially for a simple question of WHY?

            Good luck with your tinkering.

Every day is a day closer to the grave.

I'm interested to see potential gains.....

Re: Technical Question 1.8 MAF and injectors

Morbid or not it's the truth... To me spending $100,000 on an audi a8 or a supercar is too much and unnecessary but yet people do it. Really all it comes down to is being able to get in touch with the machine and see what works and what doesn't. Gains really dont amount to the horsepower but knowledge of how your engine works best.

Colin I'm sure gains will be minimal to non existant until you get into BT territory down the road and only if you choose to run a non-MAFless file for the turbo which usually its better to run mafless. So call me nuts but heck since I can do it myself....

Enthusiasts don't need a reason to pop the hood and work on their car. LOL. Not saying that you're not one p951 but sometimes when you see a huge snowdrift you just have to try and drive your car in it and back up to see if your car will leave an imprint on the drift. And if you get stuck in the drift well c'est la vie but at least you can look back and say "I did it.". HAHAHA
