Latest rumors from people in the know on the Vortex:
Latest "rumors" say that final negotiations are taking place and decision will likely come down in the next two weeks. Things look pretty solid for both 2-door and 4-door with the choice of six-speed manual or six-speed DSG. In other words nearly everyone should be happy.
I'd also look for pricing around the same price as the outgoing Golf V model. Production would start at the end of this year with cars available 1st quarter of 2011.
We'll see in a few more weeks.
No mention of Canada yet though, but too long for me to wait I will be happy with my GTI.

For us Canadians (if it even comes), we're looking at a base price of likely just under $40,000 with a price closer to $45,000 for one that is "nicely equipped". If it doesn't come to Canada... add at least another $5,000 to the price for RIV, duty, blah, blah, blah.
Yowza!

Yep can have a very nice and probably quick GTI for that kind of money. At this point I am mostly interested in the parts, like bumpers, tails and such that should be easier and cheaper to source.

I'd buy one for under 40k for sure. I paid 38 for my loaded GTI 2 yrs ago.
R brings nicers looks, awd, more power. STI and EVO are over 40k too so this car would compete with those cars for sales.
Several "Golf R" videos on the 'Tube nowadays. FYI.
I'm gonna take a pass on this one if it ever comes to Canada. With that said... dibs on whoever wants to give me the first ride in theirs!
