  • Did I miss any news? GTI R to Canada?

We all know the Scirocco isn't coming, nor the R. Anyone have any definite information on the GTI R coming to Canada? All I can find is news for the folks down south who live this place call the United States.

Definitely on the buy list if it's heading our way.

Re: Did I miss any news? GTI R to Canada?

I would really like to see it come to Canada but from our past experiences I am not holding my breath. Would be great if VW Canada could bring it in the form of a limited run 200-300 cars.
Unfortunately, I don't think there is a big enough market for cars like this at their price point in Canada. With the STI and EVO already established (as mediocre as they are in build) in the market place with higher specs on paper, and a risk of cannibalizing sales of the GTI, VW Canada would have to be very brave to make this a part of the 2010 line up.

I am crossing my fingers though!

Yah but before there were different bumper standards so Canada only was a pain in the ass. Now we're the same as the US - if they get it, it's no extra deal to send some more up here. Not saying there's a business case but it's more likely than it would have been a few years ago.

from the little information that i can find it looks as there is still no word on it. sounds like the polo is going to be in the states but nothing on the "R". best guess right now is still at least a few years, maybe sometime in 11 "does 11 sound right" 2011 sounds better. why not get a a3 quattro with a chip??? sometimes i forget they exist

well always wanted an AWD GTI/Golf... for some reason the Audi A3 just doesn't do it for me. But something I'll keep in mind as I keep looking through the US classifieds.

I doubt it will be available here in Canada as a factory order vehicle. However, with the harmonizing of the US/CAD bumper regulations... you can bet that all the dealers will import a GTI-R or two and have them sitting on their lots as pre-loved VWs.

Suffice to say, if you really want one of these... don't worry... just import your own from the USA. Considering the par dollar that is likely to occur here soon... its definitely not uneconomical to do so anymore.

I think you are right - but 2008 model year is the final year that you can transfer the warranty.

Still has not be confirmed for either Canada or the US yet. VW is still looking at the numbers, there is a configuration poll on the Vortex by the mods there that will be passed on to VW, so still hope.

                  Correct. My bad.

Seems like people on the 'net think that if it does come... it'll be more than likely a 2012 GTi-R to go along with the 4 years in-between models (ie. 2004, 2008, 2012). I tend to agree. Launching another R car this soon just wouldn't make sense. Besides, while the original R car essentially sold out in little to no time at all... the MKV R's were plentiful on dealer lots months after the launch. As such, I doubt VW is that eager to deliver another batch of 5,000 R's over to this side of the pond.

I think one of the reasons they sold much slower than was the lack of obvious performance differences between the mk4 and mk5. They are extremely similar cars when compared on paper and a lot of people would not notice any differences when driving them. Many of the differences were related to chassis, suspension - things that your average joe is not factoring in when buying a new car.

My opinion on the MK5 is the DSG was a dissatisfier with the R enthusiast crowd, and then the actual fact, that the awd 3.2 was slower than the 2.0T. Thus the stagnant sales.

The poll on the 'tex, has more requests for the stick, than the video game paddles; - of course the 'tex is not necessarily an accurate (1:1) sample population for actual potential R buyers - but of any online medium, you'd be hard pressed to find better.

They should bring both the stick and video game version. Maximize the sales that way. Myself I'd only consider the flappy paddles version. I find myself missing the DSG driving the WRX now.

It just doesn't make sense that Canada - known for more winter related things then anything else doesn't get the AWD drive version - it just feels wrong.

But what can you do. I was so hyped up about the GTI-R, but now by the time it does (if ever) comes out, I bet there will be a much better version of something else that will get my purchase.

I used to think so for 10+ yrs. But the twin clutch setups changed my mind.

I sure woudn't turn down a GTR just because it only comes in auto transmission either.

I'm just saying bring both over so people can have choice. More sales that way too.
