Non-AC belt with A/C compressor still there?

Hi guys,

I don't feel like pull all the A/C system out, but it's empty and I'm pretty sure it doesn't like spinnin when there's no coolant in it (smells bad). Can you run a non-AC belt on a 96 VR6 without pulling the A/C compressor?
