  • Another VW of Canada ignition coil recall

I just got my letter yesterday. Here is the link to the website that VW has set up:

    http://vwcoils.com/Default.aspx

For those too lazy to click on the link:

    A Voluntary Emissions Service Action

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Volkswagen is conducting this service program to inspect and, if necessary, replace ignition coils installed in some 2001 – 2007 model year vehicles.

The key points of the program are:

When your Volkswagen Dealer has sufficient parts in stock, Volkswagen will notify you via First-Class mail.
Your authorized Volkswagen Dealer will repair your vehicle for this condition at no cost to you.
If you have paid to have ignition coils replaced in your Volkswagen prior to this program, you may be eligible for reimbursement. Details are available on the Reimbursement page of this Web site.

As a valued customer, your satisfaction is our utmost priority. Volkswagen has created this Web site to:

Advise you if your vehicle is part of this program.
Explain the problem and its solution.
    Answer your questions.
    Inform you of program timing.
Help you apply for any reimbursement for which you may be eligible.

Please begin by finding out if your vehicle is affected. Simply click on Is My Vehicle Affected?

Is this for just the 1.8T engines? I haven't got a letter (yet).

Re: Another VW of Canada ignition coil recall

The recall is for Audi's as well. It seems so far that they are for the 1.8T engines, but I think other engines may qualify for this recall as well. I believe there is also a reimbersment for anyone who has replaced there coils lately too.
At least its not as bad as Toyota's recent major recall of 4,000,000 vehicles including three different models in the Lexus brand. Apparently the ecm likes to hammer the gas pedal without any notice, and since its a drive by wire system, there's nothing you can do about it. Many deaths have happened as a result of this problem.

Hey wait a second - I thought those cars never broke down!. I think its a conspiracy generated by the north american governments and auto makers to soil the good toyota name.........................or perhaps they ARE just like every other car out there.

Nope. But it appears they are notifying people in different stages. The website says my notification date is between August/September 2010!

Re: Another VW of Canada ignition coil recall

So if I bought two coils this summer because mine failed is there any way to be reimbursed if I don't have the receipts or the old coils? I'm assuming there isn't but thought I would ask. Oh and got my letter yesterday as well.

Isn't it just some floor mats coming loose and covering up the gas pedal? A guy I work with has one of the affected Lexus and he's laughing about it. He is positive it's user error, people are stupid and don't hook their floor mats to the anchor properly. It has nothing to do with the ecm, unless you know something different?

I heard Toyota is actually replacing the gas pedals though

My Dad got a letter for his A4 Avant and just said they were initiating a recall but if you had replaced the coils yourself you could submit the paperwork for a refund.

Re: Another VW of Canada ignition coil recall

venza is the only canadian toyota affected. it is a floor mat issue, but i also heard they are replacing or "triming" gas pedals. whatever that means.

as far as the vw coil recall is concerned, read the whole letter. it's a 2 part letter. the first letter, which most of you got, including myself(new rabbit), just states that action is being taken. the second letter will be sent to you to inform you that it's now your turn to come in for service. just because you received the first letter, doesn't mean you have to come in and have work done, which is jamming up service bays, and angering people who feel nothing was done, simply because it doesn't apply to them yet. they will however replace any faulty coils, during that time, if any faults occur.

so really, who cares. go when you have problems, or are instructed to come in. i don't see why anyone would get bent out of shape over this. just drive and get free coils when they die.
you probably don't like me because someone else said they didn't lol. <3

                            .
Toyota is replacing the gas pedals with a shorter one. exactly 3/4 of an inch smaller. The floor mats were thought to be the problem, but there have been proven cases that showed the floor mats had nothing to do with the sudden acceleration.
Toyota's solution? Install a shortened gas pedal, re-structure the floor(?)around the gas pedal, and install a program into the ecm that when the brake pedal and the gas pedal are depressed at the sam time, it cuts the power off.
That should of been done from the beginning. All VW and Audi's with drive by wire throttle, and is an automatic has this feature. I guess the Germans are smarter then the Japanese...

The models involved in the recall are the 2007 to 2010 model-year Camry sedans; 2005 to 2010 Avalon sedans; 2004 to 2009 Prius hybrids; 2005 to 2010 Tacoma pickups; 2007 to 2010 Tundra pickups; and Lexus’s 2007 to 2010 ES 350, 2006 to 2010 IS 250 and 2006 to 2010 IS 350 sedans.

Here is a link to a complete write up about the recall......

not that it affects me right now as I have an extra set of brand new coils.. But what if I got the VW used and didn't get the letter. Does that mean I don't qualify?
