Lost Jetta key, far away from dealership

hi there

the car is a 2001 VW Jetta VR6 (not mine thank god) and the female who only had one key... lost it...

I understand that if you loose your only key and you have an immobilizer the car and the new cut key must be in the same location to be reprogrammed.
The big problem is that we live 1200km from the nearest dealer.

soooo questions

1) how do you know if there is an immobilizer

2) can just the ECM be sent to the dealer...(or some other removable part that contains the programming)

3) or is she totally SOL and going to have to flat deck her car down south

Well if this cheap VAG-Tacho I bought works you should be able to pull the SKU out of the cluster and reprogram the keys but I would have to look into it.

yes the '01 will have an immobilizer
the car will shut off after 1 second if the key isn't synced

stonewall metioned SKC, you will need that to add a key to the system, and you will need a VAG-com or similar tool
the keys are stored in the cluster not ECM, so you would need to send the cluster for sure, or get a key cut and find someone to program it.

search the Vortex, I remember seeing write-ups on how to program your own keys. There isn't a VW dealership for 1200km's near Yellowknife? That is insane.

Yeah Grand Prairie is the closest. I did call them but they gave me no info about what years did and did not have immobilizers and if it was possible to send down the cluster. they Just said tow the vehicle end of story.

Ouch..from someone that works at one. Not all dealerships are run the same, nor are they run by the same people that obvisouly *ucked you over!

To answer your question about towing it. I think you would have to. I don't see how sending your cluster would accomplish anything. You would need to power it up somehow to be able to communicate with it too adapt the new key using the VW scan tool. And you need a working key first before adding a new key into the cluster/immobilizer I think. You might be looking at a new ignition switch with key perhaps. Its all speculation though as I have never run into a problem like this before. Let the us at the forum know how it turns out though.

No you can get a key cut according to vin but you will have to adapt the key to the immobilizer. either way ur probably going to need a tow
