  • VW Amarok Testing

Volkswagen's Amarok (Inuit for Wolf) pickup has been spotted undergoing testing on Germany's famous Nürburgring.

Looking virtually production ready, this particular prototype only has minor camouflage on the front and rear fascias. As we have previously reported, the Amarok will receive VW's new grille (from the Golf VI / Polo), contemporary styling, and a modern interior.

While details are scarce, the Amarok will be offered in a variety of different configurations. The double cab model (pictured) will be launched first, with a single cab version set to debut shortly thereafter. As with most pickups, consumers will be able to buy an Amarok with two- or four-wheel drive.

Power will come from a new-generation of common-rail diesel engines, which should combine stellar fuel efficiency (for a truck) with modest CO2 emissions.

Built at VW's Pachero plant (near Buenos Aires, Argentina), the Amarok will be launched in Central- and South America in early 2010. Six months later, the truck will be offered to Russian and European consumers. Despite confirmation that Australia and Africa will get the new model, Volkswagen has remained tight-lipped about the possibility of North American sales.

I was hoping for a smaller truck like the old Rabbit pickups.....there are no real small trucks on the market anymore.

What size is that thing like? a Tacoma size? I would love a truck that size with a diesel engine. Like the Toyota Hillux.

                Re: VW Amarok Testing

Yeah throw in a V6 diesel engine like the ones in the touregs it would be in a different league then any other diesel truck sold on this side of the Atlantic.
Don't get me wrong, if they had something like a little S10 with a high end 4 cylinder diesel I think they could capture a foothold in the market. I don't see why something like this would not work as torque is what will drive and pull, something even the 4 banger diesel has lots of.
I doubt we will see anything like an s10, but we can dream.

                  Wasn't it a 5.0L V10 TDI in the Touaregs? Didn't it pull a 747?

                    Re: VW Amarok Testing

Looks like an overpriced Frontier to me. What is it with VW these days? First we got the Routan...Odyssey then we get this Amarok...Frontier. Seems like they are playing the Korean Copycat game to me...

No disrespect to the German design team, I love the VW and Audi product but, c'mon lets have some originality in our design, if they put half the effort into the exterior of these two as they do into powertrain design, boy would we have something sweet then.

Why would VW make a truck? That's a stupid idea.

not a fan of VW making trucks at all

that being said the built quality and engines (if made by vw and not shared with NA companies) would probably kick the crap out of most other trucks out there...

                            well i'd hope so anyways

might be a market if they do a mid-size with a diesel that isn't a massive super-duty. nobody else has a smaller diesel.
