  • Rust Around the Windshield - Need Help!

Brother in law took his 83 Rabbit in to get the windshield replaced, but after they pulled the window, there was enough rust that they wouldn't put a new window in. After phoning several body shops, only one would attempt the repair at $2000. As the car is not worth this, does anyone have any contacts who could help him out?

He just dumped some cash into fixing the mechanical, it would be a shame to write this car off.

    Thanks all.

Sorry but IMO there is no way to fix this. If they pulled the windshield and there is no way to anchor a new one safely, its a BIG job to fix it with welding. I think that if you keep looking you can maybe find someone to do it for $1500 but no less!! I looked into this issue a lot when I was shopping for a Mk1 as its very common.

Its sad but the option is to invest the money or just give the car to charity or sell it for parts. You can probably get $1000 as a parts car for sure. Take that money plus the money you would have put into the windshield fix and get another car :(

agreed, unfortunately due to the shape of the window bed, custom patches need to be hand made. This is a relatively common issue with older vehicles. Glass shops cut out the windshield using a knife or a jackhammer cutter tool and regularly they scratch the paint through to the bare metal, then they install the window and moldings over top, effectively locking in any moisture that gets in. The sad truth is that, it is a labor intensive job that requires a seasoned bodyman to do. And as a result, you are short on options.

I am with Kris, Take the 1500 to 2000 and go shopping, you should be able to find a sporting little GTI from that era for that Kind of money, then maybe you can use some of the parts off your current VW for it.

Good Luck, Sorry about your luck
