  • Cam Follower Check

I checked my Cam follower the weekend. 48500kms on car. The black coating (TiAlO? - Titanium Aluminum Oxide? Or Diamond for Partical Vapor Depostion) was worn off, with a slight wearing on the metal.

I put a set of Mitutoyo Calipers across the surface, and the amount of light coming through was nil, meaning very little wear of the surface so far.

It's good to know that they last longer up here in Canada, I guess it is the temperature.

Apparently the server doesn;t like the pics from my iphone. I'll have to reformat and post after.

It's easy. If the line to the hpfp is the older banjo bolt, it's a bit tougher. But all in all a simple check. I asked at southcentre how much they were, the guy told me $183. I was gonna tell him to get fucked, that's triple over priced. Fucking stealership.

What kind of oil are you using? Looks pretty worn out; once the DLC layer is removed then it's time to replace it.

This CAM Follower is on the high pressure fuel pump. so there is only one. $61US out of the states.

And I put a straight edge across the surface; very little material has been removed, I bet I can get another 25000kms out of it.

                    Re: Cam Follower Check

Well, I checked my Cam Follower again. I last checked 12,500kms ago, last September. Nothing to write home about in terms of wear. I'll check it again in another 5k-10k; somewhere in the middle of the summer and see if higher ambient temps, combined with "Spirited" Summer driving accelerate wear.

Looks like one spot of built-up material on the Cam when you zoom in.

I've been running Mobil1 0w-40 from crappy tire for the winter, I think I'll change it. Any suggestions for a summer oil?

H2Sport out of Ontario (I think) have produced an aftermarket roller design that eliminates this BS.

As for the filter, I just use the OEM replacement every when I change my oil every 8000kms.

Although after the first 16k kms, the service intervals are 16k.

Either way, some say Castrol is Shite, and others say Mobil-1 is shite. What's the best? I guess I'll check BITOG?

I just did my oil change with some 5-40 from Lubo Moly. I like the idea of german oil in a german car. Kinda pricey but whatever... Car seem it run a little smoother now. It just had Castrol in it before.
