Re: New owner - first time for a VW and a diesel

    Awesome - thanks Ben!
On the K&N - I am used to hearing that problem with the BMWs as well - duly noted.

So today I have found a few things wrong with the car...

Power mirrors don't work, the steering wheel controls don't work and the heater fan only works on 4 and is full blast - all other settings yield no air flow at all.

I checked the fuses, namely the one for the steering wheel control and it is fine - so I am at a bit of a loss. suggestions?

Also the slide cover for the sunroof is buggered - are these hard to replace?

    Many thanks again!

might be able to find a new slide cover thing at Tundub. They usually have a lot used parts at their wrecker.

Yes but i knew this was a problem - the PO did tell me that it was working before and after he reinstalled the factory stereo those things stopped working (the fan he didn't know about). I thought it was just a fuse - will have to dig in a bit deeper.

Thanks on tunedub -will give them a shout.

probably didnt get the wiring harness clips in all the way or something if he was just playing with the stereo.

              https://www.worldimpex.com/parts/gen...tor_90113.html

I was looking for a canadian source, but for some odd reason autopartsway and canadiancarparts don't list it, even though worldpac does list it.

This allows the fan to be run at different speeds, had the same problem in an MK3 Turbo Diesel and this was the fix. I don't know where this is exactly but my guess is at the feet on the passenger side.

For the mirrors I can't tell you what could be wrong, but I can give you another hint. The switch on the drivers side door has three positions on it.
              L/R and heat

Leave it on either the left or the right, if you leave it on heat or the middle you will wreck the heaters and I have even seen the mirror discolour as well. Might as well save the heat for when you need it.

                Hey Guys,

Thanks for the replies. I am going to change out the stereo anyway so when I do that I will check the wiring in behind. The fan worked briefly today so I am not sure if it is doing some sort of climate control thing or if, as Stephan said, the connector is not completely in.

Mirrors were set on heat so maybe they got cooked by that. The mirrors are not discolored so here's hoping that they still work. Will take them off at some point and apply direct power to them and see if they function.

                Cheers,

Re: New owner - first time for a VW and a diesel

Thanks Stonewall - i will have to try and pull the fan and see if it is faulty somehow. Will see if i can bench test it. Is there such a thing as a sword for the fan? In BMWs, when the fan does what it is doing in the TDI, it is a function of a big metal thing that resembles a sword. Not sure if VW does the same sort of thing but being German they may.

Let me know the drop dead date on when you are ordering and I will see if i know by then. Super busy these days so I don't want to hold you up if i don't get a chance to get to it right away. At $52, that is pretty cheap and might be worth getting anyway but will try and sleuth it out.

                      Cheers,

Easy diagnosis,if it only has high speed it's the resistor pack,if it has intermitant speeds
                        from 1-3 it's the switch.

Just digging into everything now - anyone know how to pull the HVAC controlls out? Found a stray wire so i want to see where it leads to. Will also search on other sites to find a how to.

On another note - the interior lights switch. There is on, off and door switch activated. I find that each time I open the door, the lights don't go on. When the key is pulled from the ignition it does. What is the proper operation of the interior lights with the door activated setting?

                          Cheers,

that door thing might be a buggered door pin, which is a switch within the latch on that car. If that is the case.. be careful with keyless. I found this out the hard way. The locks re-lock if yo dont get in the car within a certain time after unlocking. If that switch is broken, you can do something like unlock the car, throw all your stuff in, oops, forgot something in the house, come back and the car is locked with your keys inside, because the car didn't know you opened the door, and relocked the car.. lol.

There should be a plastic bezel around the HVAC controls, and the screws to pull the controls are behind it.

Re: New owner - first time for a VW and a diesel

Oh god - that would suck. I have had too many ex girlfriends do that so good to know!

Thanks - got the bezel off and the loose wire was a remote wire for an aftermarket amp in the back. So, it sounds like i need to get a resistor pack for the car.

                              ** Add-on **

All the other doors activate the interior lights so it must be a bad switch. So based on what Stefan is saying, do I need to replace the whole latch or can I just replace/repair the pin itself?

Benjamin, you said that WorldPac has it? My buddy has an account with them - perhaps I should see if he can get it...

So I was unsuccessful in getting the illumination on the stereo to come back, however it did flicker a few times when I was trying to pry it out (one of the retaining clips is buggered). I think it may be more of a function of the stereo rather than the wiring. Inspected all the fuses and a couple were blown but made no difference to the steering wheel controls. Going to take all the trim panels off around the steering wheel and see if I can see a pinched or cracked wire. Any suggestions on what to look for from people's past experiences? Just wondering if there is a common failure point/reason for this.

Also, I am thinking of putting in a single din stereo I have but I am wondering if there is any sort of stereo kit that I can buy that that make sit into a single din with storage or a blanked off face? If not I guess I will have to go for a double din unit of some sort.

                              Cheers,
