  • Rear brakes, replace or repair ?

    Hi Guys

Noticed my hand / park brake is lifting real high and when I looked at the linkage in the centre console it is very twisted to one side. Is it usual to get wear like this and I should just go ahead and replace the pads? Or do you think one of the adjusters isn’t working right? When the brake is on the stopping power from it is pretty useless but when I put my summers on I looked at the pads and they didn’t look as worn as I would have expected.

Are the adjusters a known point of failure? Anyone know how thick a new pad would be so I can do a compare?

New pads or repair the bad adjuster? Which id prob put new pads on at the same time anyway.

    Thanks
    Eric..

the tensioner is built in to the caliper. Is it worth trying to fix? If your pads look good, and the park brake is releasing all the way, then you could adjust the coarse adjustment under the centre console I suppose. Check if the little leavers for the park brake on the back of the caliper go back... On my car it was a seized cable. I needed to tap it with a hammer a couple times to get my park brake to fully release. It was easy to check, because as soon as I detached the cables at the caliper, the caliper released the rest of the way, and the cables were jammed. If the cables or caliper is seized, and had been for a while, I'd expect you may need new pads.

Cables are fairly easy to change, if they are seizing.

Also, you can destroy the auto tensioners if you or anyone has ever used a c-clamp or something similar to compress the caliper piston without turning it at the same time when you replace pads.

      ok thanks

i dont think its the cable but i dont know what anyone has used on the adjusters in the past. Ill take em apart and see if they are reasonably balanced i guess and take it from there.

      Cheers

Sounds like a rusted out and snapped cable to me.

yeah, that would explaine the wonky adjuster under the console.

most of the time its the cable first and if that got ignored the caliper can follow right after . also the sliders are notorious

              Thanks guys,

I was thinking through the system last night and realised yeah it prob is a seized cable (not sure what I was thinking before) but hope to find out this weekend either way.

there is a conduit from the centre console to midway back under the car that the cable slides through (so easy to thread). I pulled too hard and yanked the cable and the conduit out.... don't do that. It's a ***** to get back in.

Cables are cheap and easy to replace. Do them both....
