    Re: driver's door alarm switch?

FYI for anyone doing this with the switch I listed - the switch comes with 3 wires (normally open, normally closed, and common), the original switch only has 2 wires (normally open and common).

Connect the existing red wire (common) to new black wire and the other existing wire to the new white wire.

      Re: driver's door alarm switch?

I finally got everything back together and my driver's door now primes the fuel pump once again. A big thanks to Flyboy for the use of the tools and the tips on install.

I think the C-shaped metal clip that holds my key cylinder in place is messed up. It was crazy hard to get the cylinder out despite having the securing bolt backed all the way out. When putting it back in the clip fell off into the door so after 3 attempts and removal of door panel I finally got it to stay in place while I pushed the cylinder back in. When tightening it back up it all seems secure but the bolt was very hard to turn in so I doubt I can pull it out again if I had to do this repair a 2nd time.

Flyboy, I'll give you a call tonight (if the baby doesn't come) and drop off your tools.

No worries, glad it worked out for you.

I had the C clip come of on one of the installs I did, and if I recall I had to take the door handle off completely to get the clip back in because it seated under a tab that you could only get at with it off.

          Re: driver's door alarm switch?

Is this the same switch that controls whether your dome lights turn on by opening the door? In another thread, someone indicated that a switch in my door handle may be the cause.

Yes and No but the switch is mostly the cause of failures.
If that C-clip falls out you turned the screw to far and it's a P.I.T.A to get
            it back together properly.
Latch prices are supposed to go down by next year new supplier probably.(Chinese?)

              Re: driver's door alarm switch?

Thanks. One suggestion made to me was to try opening the door while the car is moving and seeing if the door open alert comes on - will help to determine if it is the switch or a wiring issue. Forgot to do that this morning though...

                Re: driver's door alarm switch?

thought I'd bump up this thread

After many years, think the switch failed under warranty - but the warranty probably would have been vioded since I used the car, the door switch has finally been replaced.

                This thread finally motivated me.

Thanks Paul at Bert & Jacks for the dead door latch to look at (didn't use it, think it was a rear latch).

I looked at the Panasonic switch from digikey, but didn't order it. Ended up buying a Burgess sealed switch ( the original switch is a Burgess), you will see why....cue pictures.

                old failed switch:

These switches take a lot of abuse, having a sealed switch may give a few extra days of life.

As most replacement switches, the mounting holes will not line up. This picture illustrates the difference.

So the holes need to be modified, and the edge of the switch should line up with the edge of the metal.

As you can see the screwheads will not affect the latch fitment (2mm flathead drive screws). The side down is what will be against the door.

And finally the wires soldered on, I clipped off the extra terminal.

                What is not shown is:
The extra space around the screws was filled with JB Weld,
the nuts on the othere side of the screws were JB Welded,
the wires were siliconed around the solder joints. < all done for reliability.

BAD: My car has the plastic clips on the window regulators, and one was broken. Saturday VW Parts dept. is closed at 4pm, got to 5th Ave @ 4:30pm, oh well this makes me shop around for the best price now. Any online sources????

P/N on the switch would be helpful Maybe I should stock them for everyone or something.

                    Re: driver's door alarm switch?

The panasonic one I listed is sealed and the mounting holes appear to be in the same position. Only difference is it has wire leads coming out instead of terminals.

I still have one sitting in a drawer, $10 if anyone wants it.

didn't realise the Panasonic switch was sealed, and holes lined up to give proper switch actuation.

                      switch I used

bought 10, with tax and shipping they worked out to $7.82 USD each

So you can't get an OEM switch? That looks a bit iffy (the modified holes and the screws used).

yes you can get an oem switch, VW calls it a latch assembly and it only costs > $300 maybe $400.

Unfortunately the switch was a custom part for VW and only VW, no outside sales.

time will tell how iffy it will be.

I didn't use screws at all, just dumped epoxy around it. I figured if it went after a year I would try again if I could get it out or shell out for a new module. 2 years and still holding.
