  • TDI Recall

So I got a recall on my off warranty 2004 TDI. Seems they want to flash the ECU and "possibly" change the glow plugs to some newly designed metal ones. I am not sure what my current glow plugs are made of? This comes at a good time for me as I have CEL on.....and the code says that the #1 glow plug is dead. I wonder what the ECU will result it....it is supposed to reduce some pollution and increase driveability. I hope it does not take the edge off the car. What do you guys think? My car is stock.

Thanks for the link.....I skimmed it and nobody seems to have anything bad to say for stock engines. I think I will call 5th Ave tomorrow and see when they can fit me in.

Wonder if I am going to get a letter for the passat, hmmmmmm.....
I know I was a third owner and got the recall letter for my golf for the brake switch, so I wonder if they will track me down for this too.

there was a bulitin on these cars back when they were new regarding the same thing (i did like 30-50 sets of new injectors glowplugs and moduals ) . its just trying to get a small amount of suit out when you first start the car . it wont work . the pd engines are starting to fail california emmisions and its not the glow plugs vw . its the pd . the oil vw wants you to use in them is not sufficant and the cams are wearing out creating incorrect a/f so emmisions are going through the roof . if you own one of the 04-05 jetta pd keep your eye open for a new head or engine. if you own a 06 pd just run lol

this set of cams only had 90k on it look at the missing hardening on the lobe

              Re: TDI Recall

I wonder if VW will have to eat the engine cost as there are some long term requirements for cars to meet emissions standards. (I thought it was something like 10 years)

                Re: TDI Recall

I doubt they will replace engines or do much about the Cam problem at hand. Easiest way to fix the problem, change the oil specs to a better spec then that should either slow it down or get rid of it.
Oh and I did get the recall letter today in the mail, so yes even if you are not the first owner they will hunt you down.

Fantastic! I wonder what mine looks like at 210,000km...

I'll have to keep an eye out for a recall letter, I know they switched out the glowplugs early on but I was having alot of problems with them so it may not be the same thing.

I'm booked in for next Monday, I do want to check with them as I have the replacement NGK's from the "cold start" recall and I've read that in some cases is may not be covered.

                          Re: TDI Recall

Also the first bulitin installed porcelain plugs and they are now the reason for this recall . Some of the tips are falling off . Don't forget this recall will eliminate your chips when done .have your flash removed first and reinstalled when your tuner has new program for the glow plug recall or the tune may just reverse recalls flash and not make the new glow plugs work correctly

                            Re: TDI Recall

Turns out the NGK's that have been in there for three plus years are steel tip and the program is up to date.

Pulled my valve cover last night, this is just a sampling but any opinions?

Is that a pitted surface we are seeing?
