  • MKV 2.0T BPY Cam Follower Issue

Many owners of vehicles outfitted with the 2.0T BPY motor have issues with a high amount of wear on the cam follower for high pressure fuel pump.

It is a poor design (should be a roller) and leads to many problems. If you go too long without replacing/checking your cam follower, it will wear thru and ruin the cam thus needing a expensive top-end rebuild.

There is a thread on MKVGTI.com where they are petitioning VW and sending emails to top executives to try to have VW acknowledge this flaw, and include it in regular inspections and such. Add yourself to the pole/list for strength in numbers.

Re: MKV 2.0T BPY Cam Follower Issue

Not sure if it will come to fruition, but I signed it a while back. Anybody with a BPY engine should sign it.

I got my cam follower removed at about ~34k km (15-20k on Unitronic Stage 1) and the diamond-like black coating was starting to show a little wear in the center so it got replaced as it was better to start out with a fresh cam follower anyway for Stage 2+. Engine oils high in zinc help slow down wear but ultimately this is a flawed design courtesey of VAG.

Maybe if this is successful, our BPYs can get recalled and we can get CCTAs (TSI engine)

If we got the CCTA's that would be sweet, since they removed all the flaws of the BPY.

IE. Roller cam follower and timing chain as oppsoed to belt.

Yep, That would be the case, All MKV's up to half way thorugh 2208 or so have the BPY engine. Also your GTi might have had a faulty Thrust sensor on the HPFP. There was a TSB issued on that.

The TSI is the CCTA, and has a engine cover similar to the A4's

Apparently H2Sport has the cure for cancer regarding the BPY engine.

I haven't heard of anybody successfully getting a new cam follower under warranty. Stupid, yes. It is a huge design flaw and VAG is just politely ignoring it. There is a TSB to get the follower checked, but that's it.

Let's hope the H2Sport comes out with a bullet proof design, because it is the weakest link on the car currently.

their solution was the new TSI engine with the new follower... as for us FSI owners, VW just says tough luck

it could be some time before H2sport releases their roller follower. with their good reputation on the line, i'm sure they are testing to 110% to make sure it dosen't fail...

I was talking to a couple of friends out east in the VW circle of trust.
Get ready for this VW is going to produce a new line of oil and possible lower the service intervals.
                        Strongly suggest an oil additve.
New companies being being considered are Redline and Motul.
Huge failures in NorthAmerica but not Europe.
                        They use AGIP.

well we (vw techs) have been saying this for ever . The oil they have been requesting here is crap . I have been using total 9000 for my customers and my brand of anti wear additive since i opened . fully seeing the problems associated with castrol . and we have all but eliminated a lot of the premature wear issues on these engines . (after we replace the follower that castrol destroyed from the factory's service program)
