He already posted that he is big into car audio and I would guess he is putting in a competition level system of some kind.
oh...well...I guess I missed that thread because I didn't see anything stating that. I'm sure you could get a aftermarket 160A one, might need some retrofitting to work though.

If you want more then 120 amp alternator I would got to a re builder and ask them to see what they can do. If you have the need for more then the extra 30 amps that you can get with the bigger alternator then I would recommend looking into separate batteries and Capacitors for your system. A high output alternator does not always supply the cleanest power to your system in the back so I would look to see what other options are available.

120 amp alternator subtract 30 amps to cars electrical components.
use some of ohms law. 90(12)= 1080 watts of usable power... people who are putting in these big 3000 watt systems dont get anywhere close to that amount of wattage.
using caps only oppose the change in voltage. and batteries are big capacitors. if you need more power you need bigger alternator.

if you're in a stereo comp., how do you get you're idle up high enough to get full alternator output, considering you can't usually sit in a car outputting 3000watts for very long?

Your math is not wrong but your theory is still not sound. No amplifier is 100% efficient nor will 3000watts of amplification ever be drawn at once. It was once theorized that caps in a system help maintain voltage levels when high current is drawn. Most of this was with old amplifier technology and the people who pioneered it have now stated they are not needed with modern amplifiers and can actually make it worse due to the ESR of the capacitor in the system. Also if you want louder you need to either double your wattage or speaker cone area, both of which will give you a 3dB gain. If you are not going for "boom" a well designed system is fully attainable without upgrading the alternator.

in order for competition grade SPL(not db drag since vehicle is shut off) alternator upgrade is a must. and very true no amplifier is 100% efficient... class D though is around 90-95%.
the only way a cap will do worse is if it is hooked up wrong... it makes sure that the amplifier is always getting that 12 volts. since there is always voltage spikes within the system.

Only the newer high end class D amplifiers are good for full range though. Most of them will also state to NOT use a cap with their system. There will always be voltage ripple and spikes no matter what you do. Amplifiers are made to deal with changes in voltage with no difference on the output.

i am a certified car audio installer and stonewall what you said is wrong. whoever is telling you that caps dont help the system and can do harm are wrong. there will always be voltage ripple yes but the capacitor is a tool that can help minimize it.
these are fact that im stating that are right out of mecp. unless you know someone who is rewritting the new mecp, which im pretty sure there isnt, than pretty sure that the mecp book i have is still valid
