Im betting they're more than willing to have bad rep as oppose to spending 500 on correcting the problem. Time for a hybrid oilpan.

Yeah well lesson learned on this one in terms of fast oil changes.

If reviewing the letter, well yeah it is easy to strip a plug if you don't tighten it the first few thread properly. I have also seen times where they put it in a half turn and figured it was right and went at it with a wrench.

In terms of the helicoil, well I would have said
"Any competent repair shop would pull atleast pull the pan that they were drilling into to put the helicoil in to assure that no metal particles were left in the pan. The pan is made of aluminum and so the typical magnet will not work to draw the metallic particles in. No shop would take the chance of leaving any metal in the pan because of the high chance of motor failure either now or down the road because of this.
So in saying this I would turn around and ask if they do this so much and don't pull the oil pan how many engines have these guys cooked because of this? Their 30% failure rate with Helicoils had to get a stat from somewhere, I just hope their customers understand what giant risk they are in with their cars because of this.
Can you imagine an engine that fails on a newer car with warranty that won't be covered when they find the helicoil in the oil pan.

I used to turn wrenches and these type of people give everybody a bad name.

On the hybrid pan note, well i can say mine took a little grinding, but thus far it works great!

put grease in the grooves of the tap and all the shavings get caught in it. none in the pan.

i've used this technique before (not on an oil pan) and I've found it doesn't work 100% as near then end you always get a few shavings pushed out of the end of the hole so you're best to pull the pan in this case.

We have fixed countless oil pans because of these fast lube strip shows and we have never had any motor failure issues because of particulates left in the pan. Bring it to SCFC. I'll fix it!
