Oilpan bolt stripped

So I brought my car in at minute lube on mcleod to get an oil change as I was in a hurry and some noob stripped the threads on my oil pan so the bolt is now useless... They put in a temporary bolt in which im sure is stupid and lo behold there is a oil leak coming from under the car.. Pissed right off as I am can I get the pan rethreaded somewhere safely?

dude that sucks, yea those places are sketchy because they require no training or previous experience to work there (i knew a girl working at one who didn't even have a drivers license and didn't own or had ever worked on a car previous to getting the job!).

I would personally fight to have them replace the oil pan and pay to have an oil and filter change done at the dealer or a reputable shop, also have the other shop check (and clean) the oil pump screen for metal as Im sure the new bolt was just a different pitch and cut its own new threads and I doubt they cleaned it out properly. To retap the threads they really should have removed the pan and done it properly.

I actually know one of their "techs". He's got more years to him and a nice guy. I trust him with the oil changes but its the youngins that are there for their 9-5 that I don't trust. They're the ones that just stand around looking lost most of the time.. Im coming back tuesday to complain and *****.

What he said. They should have to play to repair that. Any other reputable shop would.

me- how come you don't anymore?
him- i did an oil change on a car and forgot to put oil in and he left and the engined siezed a couple blocks down and they fired me because they had to replace his engine.
me- i can see why they fired you ha ha.

So i totally agree they have some real knob jobs working there. But put a good fight up to get your whole pan replaced and a new oil change. I believe it's only fair to you.

The only reason why they strip oil drain plugs is they use some kind of shitty drain plug gasket and over torque the crap out of the plug. If you bring in an oem filter and an oem gasket and tell them to torque the drain plug to 24 ftlbs then everything would be o.k. but I bet you won't find a torque wrench within five kilometers of the place.

You can always helicoil the oil pan. We always are repairing oil pans from Minit/rapid Lubes...

I wouldnt let them do a damn thing, i would make them agree to pay to get it replaced by a competent shop like the dealer. once a thread is stripped re tapping it only presents a small percentage of the thread left and the next person will just strip it again. it needs replacing the pan or helicoiling

i'd tend to agree with kordain, I can't imaging what solution they would dream up with their limited tools and lack of experienced employees. I have a bad feeling that JB weld would enter the equation somewhere...

best to fight to have a reputable shop fix their mistake, i mean over torquing a drain plug by that much is kind of past the careless stage as it is.

they're not paying for anything and charging me $30 to put a helicoil in.. if you've ever seen those things they are really cheap looking and pretty sure they will not hold for long.. the manager isnt very helpful and very defensive. He's feeding me stuff about honda's and vw's having crappy oil pans (that may be). since they know the aluminum pans on VW's are so soft I don't see why they wouldn't be more careful. Im going to go through BBB with this.

Complaint filed. I am not bringing my car in there to get repaired. Hopefully they pay for a brand new oilpan. The manager really annoyed the **** out of me.

When I worked in the shop we saw oil pans from many different places including Mr.Lube come through the door. The worst was from an old 70's Dodge shaggin waggin van that pretty much required you to drop the subframe to get the pan out. The lube places always paid for the repair though as it was their fault.
Um, in terms of a new one, go to a shop that has the right tools, 4 of the bolts holding the pan in require a special tool or they might pull the tranny and waste a lot of time doing this. I am confident that all the shops that post on here will have it, or will atleast know of the 4 bolts I am talking about.
