  • Cold air?

Im just wondering if any one has had any issues with Neuspeed race series cai, its going on a 1.8t. On many sites they have a warning for water, wondering if anyones had this issue. And also is the race series cold air louder then the pflo intake.
    Let me know,
    Thanks

The only way ur gonna get hydro lock is if you submerge the intake(cone) into water!

Let that be a lesson to every single person that is thinking about purchasing, has purchased, and/or has installed and is worried!

      Re: Cold air?

Learned that lesson the hard way. I was lucky enough not to hydrolock the engine, but my MAF went screwy afterwards. Needed a new one for my Nissan and it cost $500.00. I was stuck in highway traffic doing about 90 kms with a waterfall of rain that poured for 20 mins. Because the CAI filter was located behind the bumper with the inner wheel liner being the only thing seperating the filter from the elements, it got soaked. Needed a $150 tow home and a new filter.

I don't think the CAI is worth it. I would stick with the short ram intake. The CAI may get you one x-tra HP give or take, over the SAI. Again...its not worth it. If you do choose the CAI, make sure you spring for the By-pass valve so that you can't Hydro-lock the engine. Water does not compress in the cylinder and you will bend a valve or worse, if enough gets in.

I bought the race series intake and thought about it for a while and opted for the pflo, my buddy who was on here but sold his car now was using the race series and he said he had no problems with it. I put the pflo in and I like it, I haven't really noticed much difference with it HP wise and sound wise. IMO i would go pflo just to be safe

          Re: Cold air?

You can suck all the cold air you want, but no matter how cold that air is, its going to be heated as soon as it touches the hot turbo. Therefore the "cold" aspect of an intake is pretty worthless on a turbocharged car, what most people like about them is it makes it easier to hear the turbo spooling (louder) since the muffling aspects of the stock airbox are gone.

All CAI's are filters on a stick. A $300 intake is essentially the same as a $30 intake on ebay. If you really want a cold air intake, I'd suggest buying a kit off ebay and upgrading the filter to an ITG or K&N.

          OR

          you can try this method

I ran that Neuspeed Race CAI on my Mk4. What I can say about it -

            1. No problems and you will not hydro lock your engine unless you are > 1 foot deep submerged in water, in which case water is also coming into your car.

            2. Awesome sound improvements, engine and turbo get very loud and aggressive.

            3. Very well built and smooth curves to maximize airflow through the tube, and fits very well and looks good in the engine bay.

            4. Probably no performance gains

I think a "cold" aspect is the same regardless of turbo or not. Heat transfer isn't a constant. So yes, 30 degree air coming in might get heated to 60 passing through the turbo, but 10 degree air will come out colder (even if it's 40). So your net "cooling" should be pretty similar and net you the same heat loss advantage (which I agree isn't that much).

The hose to the box isn't so much about temps as it is about pressure and removing negative boost points (compressing the air as it is forced into the stock box). Still lots of debate cause it's hard to prove hp gains. Vagcom does confirm more airflow though.

                        Re: Cold air?

go with the long filter , ecs has a two piece unit its cheaper and you can swap the end arround so you have a short ram in the winter and re install the long upper in the summer thats what jeff did

I got the P-Flo from a 1.8T on my TDI and just to be safe you can get a splash cover from Outerwears. I found the Outerwears cover a good $20 investment because the P-Flo is not totally immune to water getting into the engine bay.

Yea thats my car, and i would like to go with a long filter, it looks cleaner in the engine bay. i was just worried about all this talk about hydo lock, but if i can shorten to a short ram in the wet seasons, then perfect!
Mike we should do a little photo shoot with the 2 door, 4 door indigo blue combo, would look sick
