They lost their battles but are going to win their wars.

Auto Giants Volkswagen, Toyota to Join Hands
Europe's biggest automaker Volkswagen is seeking a partnership with the world's no. 1 Toyota. If their partnership goes well, the two companies could become the world's strongest player.
Christian Wulff, the chief minister of the German state of Niedersachsen, met with Toyota president Katsuaki Watanabe at Toyota headquarters in Japan on Wednesday to discuss building a technology partnership between the two companies. If it picks up speed, it could lead to unprecedented synergy effects.
The two automakers will seek standardization and sharing of parts for a number of models, thereby reducing the price of parts and manufacturing cost. "If the two companies share auto parts, their price competitiveness will be unparalleled," say experts.
Volkswagen could become the world's biggest car manufacturer when the global economy recovers. It recorded record sales of 6.27 million vehicles amounting to 6.3 billion euros last year.
Meanwhile, agencies report that BMW and Peugeot Citroen are also considering a technology partnership to reduce production cost, while Mercedes-Benz and BMW are seeking a capital partnership.
