  • slight sputtering on accel (1.8T)

i have 2001 gti 1.8t chipped. everything on it besides the chip is stock besides having a cone filter sticking off of the maf sensor lol. seems to have a slight sputtering on acceleration. idle is fine. took off the maf sensor and blew it out seemed to help but still sputters a little. any ideas what this might be?

could be the MAF or maybe a coil on its way out, bad spark plug, disconnect the maf and run it and see if that makes a difference. if its only under heavy acceleration then it could be a plug as thats when they show breakdown. when did you last change them?

I had the same thing happen on my 1.8T last year.
Have the spark plug wire resistance checked as well as the ignition coils.
One of the plug wires is the most probable cause of your problem.

Brake cleaner would be a better product to spray on the MAF rather then the electrical contact spray. That may have some oil content to prevent corrosion on electrical connectors.

if it runs the same with the maf off then leave it alone, its almost certainly ignition related, prob worth replacing the plugs anyway as they recommend minimum replace them every two years or they cause problems. Had them go on mine last year and they caused intermittent spluttering under acceleration.

I had a coil pack go on me in the fall and it would only sputter when I accelerated. Didn't through a check engine light until a few days after it happened. Hooked up vag-com and it told me exactly which coil pack was the problem.

andre if i had my cable id scan you, ill have it tomoro.
try those spare coil packs you got.

NEVER clean your MAF with break cleaner, it leaves it oily and you want it dry! There is MAF cleaner out there, i bought mine at napa auto parts....its called CNC MAF cleaner!

OP, are you running colder plugs that are gapped properly? If you dont have a vagcom, just take out each coil pack and put a new one in, start the car, rev it and see if it changes(atleast let it run for 10secs so it can adapt) and go down the line until you find which one it is.

                          You beat me to it...
never use brake clean it leaves a film on the sensor and actually makes it worse.
For what an MAF costs now it's better just to replace it or use the Vag and read gps at idle and under load.
