Can objects get stuck in the brake pad??

There's a loud squealing noise coming from my front passenger side brake assembly, and so after looking at it and comparing it to all 3 other disc brakes I believe that something is stuck in the brake pad that is causing the noise.

I have tried driving backwards in a parking lot, swerving but so far nothing has come loose. Whatever is stuck is causing more problems because the rotor now has a gouge about 2-3mm wide. If it helps the noise is dependent on speed and if I apply the brakes (more time between the noise at lower speeds and vice versa, if I apply the brakes the noise is constant).

Any ideas on what could be causing it? I'll be switching to my summers either tonight or tomorrow so I'll take a look then, but I still have no clue what it is I'd be looking for.

P.S. I did search through these forums and through vortex but didn't come up with anything that was helpful in my situation.

Could be a rock in between your rotor and pad, happened to me before and it sounds exactly like what you described.

probably is a rock. Go on deerfoot and hit your breaks when you are going about 100, it should dislodge it. make sure no one is behind you.

It has worked for me twice.

Drive backwards then brake and drive forwards and brake and repeat as necessary. Worked for me.

rocks can get under the pad and then get lodged in the groove down the centre of the pad, if its already gouging your disc i would push the pads back/in when you are changing the wheels and see if you can dislodge it with something thin inserted between pad n disk, or take the pad out, not a hard task if youve got the wheel off anyway.

probably is a rock. Go on deerfoot and hit your breaks when you are going about 100, it should dislodge it. make sure no one is behind you.

Haha...That is some sketchy advice.
I wouldn't attempt that at all. If its already cutting into the rotor, then its lodged in the pad. You'll just have to remove 2 bolts that hold the caliper onto the saddle. Remove two bolts, or slam on the brakes doing 100 kms on deerfoot??? I would remove the caliper.

nah my mechanic told me that advice, it heats up the rock so much it just disintegrates. a rock is too soft to gouge the rotor for the most part. Just make sure you have lots of pad left and its not the squealer clip.

Haha... The only time I'm on deerfoot is during rush hour so that might not work out too well for the folks behind me Looks like I'll be switching over tonight while the gf's at work.

Last time I took the Jetta in to see George, he reported the front brakes at 70% so I should be good for a little while.

maybe you can put out a bulletin when you are driving so that we know to avoid you.


do the CORRECT & SAFE thing and jack up the car, remove the wheel, undo two bolts and check and see. if its not a rock stuck in there you are going to have to do this anyway, so why not do it right the first time?
