  • 16v questions.

I have a 1992 Jetta that I am going to build into a track car. The car has an 8v with 255k on it. I am a VW noob so I don't really know anything about the car yet. I am going to change the engine later on but I am unsure what to get. I'm looking for 130 - 200hp. I've been told that the easiest thing to do is to swap in a 16v, but how much power would I be able to get out of it? Would it be worth it to save up and getting a 1.8T?

    Re: 16v questions.

I love the old 16v's, you could get the 9A 2.0 16v for dirt cheap these days I imagine and they are ~135hp right out of the box. It doesn't take too much to get them to 200hp and beyond if you go FI. Personally I've always felt that the G-60 16v was the ultimate conversion to do with these motors and can get you well over 200hp. I had a link to this company that manufactured a lot of the necessary components at one time but I can't seem to find it here. I'm sure someone else knows who I'm talking about it's just been a really long time since I was looking into going that route, but if you do it you will be my hero. For a turbo kit check out these guys...

Turbo 16v for high hopes on a big budget(say 400hp+ on built motor). A sweet swap for not a lot of $$ would be a vr imo, along with the plus suspension and brakes/wheels from the donor car. 180hp of torquey smooth vr goodness in a 2300lb mk2, yummy!

        Re: 16v questions.

I love the 16v even thou the T-BELT is driven off the exhaust side, you can do a fair amount of mods for fairly cheap to attain 200hp.
After that it gets costly in a hurry.
Speed is a Question about Money!! How Fast Do You Want to Go??
Don't forget about brakes and suspension work.

Thank you all for the help. I'm not looking to do a VR swap, I want to stick with the four cylinders. Yes brakes and suspension will be some of the first things I do to the car. I'm just figuring what engine to put in when the time comes.

              Re: 16v questions.

2L ABA, 130hp pretty strong and you could probably trade for a kitten. Then just upgrade later. I love 16v's but they are more money to buy and maintain, if you just want power then why not get something cheap.

Vortex will tell you not to do a VR in a MK2 but most of those guys are just jealous haha.

Tunedub has a 16v form a '92 passat (motronic) for about $800 I believe. Kinetic sells a basic (but expandable) 16v turbo kit for around USD2500. Fun stuff.

Can you turbo a 1.8 16v? Or is it only the 2.0?

something tells me that you don't realize how much work it will take to do that mod and properly at that.
16v change over and a turbo package is great i would bank on about 5 grand minimum!!
to do it kinda right with a used engine.

                            Re: 16v questions.

first off... if the car has 255+ k on it, there is A LOT of doing to make the thing into a "track car". complete suspension (mounts, bushings, balljoints too), brakes, wheels / tires... i could go on and on.

from "power" standpoint, you have a TON of options with a mk2 car. if you're sticking to 4cyl, you could build an FI 2.0 8v, an FI 16v, or 1.8t. keep in mind that all of these will require new engine management to run properly. also keep in mind that you'll need a new transaxle (02a / 02j), and should really run a decent differential. DO NOT build a G6016v. not worth your time.

to keep this short, i'll stop blabbing. OP if you have questions, feel free to PM me... as i have A LOT of experience with these cars.

                              /\/\werd. elliot is smrt.

an ABA from a mk3 will bolt in with it's own management, almost no wire cutting, and makes a big difference in a mk2. plus it's an easy motor to turbo later on down the road. if that's what you want. easiest swap for a noob like yourself.

                              i've got a g60 in my mk2 golf. it's fun.
