  • TDI Troubles

    Hey all,
    Not my car this time...

A friends TDI (2000 or 2001 I think), is loosing power under load, but not all the time. It's not 'limp mode' by the sounds of it, just a loss of power, and it seems to recover eventually. My first thoughts were clogged intake, or MAF. I would think that clogged intake would be a more consistent loss of power though, so MAF may be more likely. I've got a pretty good idea of how to determine if a MAF is failing, but the car is in BC, so hard to play with. I'm heading out there this weekend or next, and was hoping to have a few ideas as to what I could look for.

AFIK, regular maintenance is up to date, so I'm not thinking about clogged filters and stuff like that yet.

I'll have my VAG-COM, and don't want to dig too too deep, but the car is in Invermere, and getting it to a dealer is an all day event. If there are some basic things I can look for, it would help.

At the moment, I'll probably try to check out the MAF, and maybe peek into the EGR and see how plugged up it looks and see if anything turns up. She says it feels a bit like it looses boost for a bit. Hope its not the turbo failing! It has been doing it for several months now though, so the turbo probably would have packed up by now.

    Thanks in advance!

    Re: TDI Troubles

If the turbo is overboosting (making more than ~20psi), which exceeds the map sensor limits, the ecu shuts the turbo off to prevent further damage. If you shut the car off, and back on, the turbo will start working again... so it might be time for a new turbo.

      Re: TDI Troubles

I asked if she had to re-start the car to get the power to come back (because thats what happened when my turbo died). She said no, it just sorta looses power, and then it comes back again while she drives.

Was thinking maybe a failing MAF could do this?

MAF would be a more consistent power loose.

was going to add that there is no check engine light, if that helps.

You posting all these problems has gotten to my engine, it is now stuttering under load. I thought it was just the fuel filter as it was old but noooo it has to go and be something harder to fix :(

MAF or at worst the injection pump or turbo. Check MAF first.

do you know basic setting checks for egr values, and or block values for maf? knowing those will help your diag. also check vacuum lines and wastegate activation, sticky?
