  • Some Questions about old Jetta's

Alright I have just purchased some cars from my uncle for cheap. They are a 1994 VW Jetta, and a 1988 VW Jetta. They are in excellent shape, even though they were winter driven they were parked in a heated garage when not outside. They have been in storage for about 5 years. Anyhow they are both TDI's but they have no engines. I am planning to make these into some go-fast cars for track days and such. This means putting in new engines and since these are my first vee-dubs i have no idea where to buy. So if any of you guys know any places to buy new engines or have engines for sale your help would be greatly appreciated. I want to get petrol engines because i don't like diesel so i was also wondering if any of you guys have done a TDI to Petrol engine swap before. Any pointers, tips, or comments are greatly appreciated! Thank you for helping out a VW nooblet.

You could try TUNEDUB in the classified section or you can get an engine/tranny etc. from P.N.P but thats a gamble with what you'll get.

Thank you for you help. Do you guys know if the engine in the Golf is the same as in the Jetta?

Is that a diesel engine? Because I am trying to find a petrol one.

Re: Some Questions about old Jetta's

Yeah thats a diesel engine, only problem is that those model years didn't come with a TDi, but only a TD. A lot more work to do if you want to go to a tdi. In terms of switching, well since I have worked on all those years of diesels here is what hits the top of my head.

              Fuel tank
Fuel Pump (diesel's have the pump run off the engine, not out of the tank)
Fuel Lines (Handle the extra PSI since diesel lines don't have much if any pressure)
              Tranny
              Not sure about the axles
              Evap stuff
All the electronics for the engines as diesels from that era have squat for electronics.
              Exhaust

Honestly, depending on how much time you have, maybe consider selling the shells and just buying a Gas dub and go from there. If the bodies are in good shape all you need to do is find somebody wanting to throw a TDi engine in one of these and you could probably make what the other car would cost plus some extra for parts.
Other option is to put a few engines in these bad boys and try and make a few bucks flipping them, but thats your choice.

300HP I don't think so, 350+ pounds of torque probably.
Remember .232 are not for PD engines, but for engines with an electronic fuel distribution pump.
For those years of shells you are better to stick with an AHU engine (96-97 Passat TDi, 97-99 Jetta or Golf TDi) as the ALH and beyond will require serious fabrication and parts to make work because of the engine mounts and VNT turbo.

It's called gasoline here in Canada.

Throw in a JH engine and throw a carb on it instead of injection.
Run a mechanical fuel pump that would be the easiest to do.
                    (still alot of work thou)

go 1.8t and you will be happiest . there are even companies out there that have the conversion harnesses to make it work in your applications .

No, it had a stock 1.8, I was hinting that you could buy it and save yourself the trouble of swapping
