Show me an Optima battery that has 80AH like the stock TDI battery. The Group 35 Red top has only 44AH and the Group D35 Yellow top has only 48AH. You need at least 60-70AH to effectively heat up the glow plugs and crank the starter at -25 to -30. Even then a brand new battery can still freeze. Believe me I have spent many a Christmas in Fort McMurray. Optimas are only for gassers with huge stereos.
yeah. thats why i didnt get one. crank amps are there, but amp hours are lacking for the really cold snaps. Front loaded crank amps arn't intended for diesel. Cold will lessen the ability of any battery though, optima or otherwise.
There was a guy on TDIclub from somewhere around Michigan that knew of a custom battery manufacturer that had a 110AH battery that could fit in the TDI battery case. I wish I could find that thread again.
