    Quick question.....

I am in the market soon for some new brake pads. I want low dust and good stopping power. I know nothing about brakes. I do do lots of highway and spirited driving.

Its an 02 TDi Jetta, 5 speed.

I should change the rotors at the same time. Any ideas? Blanks?

What are the size of stock rotors? I may want to go up a size. I hate my stock 15 inch rims and will buy 16 inch next year for my winter use. I also use 17s in the summer.

    Any ideas?

Yes...I ahve done lots of reading on this and still cant make up my mind on anything. So if you have any personal choices let me know. I really want to avoid the "I seen an ad once" opinions.

    Re: Brake Pads

I have the PBR semi metalic ones. I definatly noticed a difference over OEM with them. Less brake fade for sure. Haven't tried anything else though, so hard to compare to other aftermarket stuff.

If you want low dust DO NOT get the PBR Ceramics. I have more dust than i did with the stock ones!

You could change the rotors at the same time, but its not necessary. While the rotors are cool, run your finger nail and if there is ridges and bumps then you should consider changing them, if they are flat, then let it stay as is.

Im not sure of ur rotor size as in u got a TDI but the 1.8T is 11.3" fronts and 10.1" rears i believe. If you plan to "upgrade" you will need new carriers and new claipers, in the end its not worth it unless you really got use for them. Maybe consider changing to GLI brakes(calipers, rotors, carriers) as that will be a bit better then stock.

I got Brembo rotors all the way around and Hawk HPS pads. The combination is great, the stopping power is awesome, the dust is minimal.

The only upgrade you have for rotors are either a VR6 setup or an R32 setup.
You can get a Zimmerman cross drilled rotors for your car, but you honestly won't notice to much of a difference unless you are on the track. Upgrading to the bigger setup is not just the rotor though, Calipers, pads, brake lines, and maybe even the steering knuckle. Put it this way, unless you have done some major mods to your TDi, stick to the stock setup with some good pads and Rotors.
What is good, well typically with VW stuff like this, the more money it is, the better it is.
Just don't go overboard, you have a TDi, not a souped up VR6 24 valve with a turbo on it.

VW brakes are huge as it is. Stock blank rotors are not expensive, and it's recommended to change them when you do the pads. Heard good things about the Hawk Streets. I've had them on the list with the stainless lines for awhile but damn mine just won't wear out.

LOL, um, I think Bart and his set up might have something to say about this comment... a TDI can be tuned just like any other engine...

                    Re: Brake Pads

Remeber that the rotors are the heat sink or your brakes and they throw it out while driving. If you change pads and not rotors, the new pads will not last as long due to the heat. They wear together!!!!!! NAPA has them for cheap and just use oem pads. Stay away from pagid pads as well!!!!

                      you are partially correct.........
it's actually the square cut seal in the caliper getting weak that causes premature brake wear. After 2 brake jobs re-build the calipers or live with
                      pre-mature wear.

A tdi can be tunned, trust me I know as my TDi could probably keep up to Bart if needed. A TDi with almost everything done that can be done would still be no match for a turbo charged VR6 24 valve. I understand traction would be the issue in both camps, but in the end the TDi will have equal or more torque, but a lot less HP. Trust me, I love my TDi and have been known to drive it like I stole it. Although I do know that as much power as I may add the TDi's most positive aspect is that I can go on a much longer trip without having to go to a gas station
