  • Battery light question for VW MK2

Im just wondering if it is normal to see the battery light go on when you start the car on a VW MK2.

After i start the car it stays on until i hit the gas then it goes out.

Could that be a sign of the battery life coming to its end.

Mk1's always do that too, no idea why. If I'm going to leave the car to warm up or something I always just tap the gas to get it to turn off and then leave it.

I don't think you have anything to worry about.

could just be cold alternator and low rpm at start isn't quite getting you enough juice. could be something a little weak in the charging system, but really, in at older car, if it only hapens for a second at start, I wouldn't worry too much yet.

My radar detector has a nice voltage meter. I check it when I'm concerned. Probably not as accurate as a multimeter even though it reads to 2 decimals, but it's easier to keep an eye on when you drive.

it just needs to be excited to start charging otherwise it goes dead. Remove your regulator and clean the ends, or buy a new one, they are cheap and easy to install, the ends are just getting worn down.
Also clean all your connections and grounds, incl the one on tranny and ones on intake and valve cover, clean grounds make all the difference in the world on these cars.

being that he probably has never owned a mk2 or mk1 he did'nt realize he had to rev the engine for the charging process.
nothing wrong with the wiring or belts.
