  • MY MK2 broke down HELP!!!

So im driving home and all of a sudden the car just dies..I pull over and, at first i thought i ran out of gas, but when i tried to turn it over the only sound i heard was my key chain..

I called my buddy, we boosted it and it started like a champ first try.

I drove 1 KM and the car dies again..FOOOOK:

My buddy gave me a tow home, and i parked it inside...

Does anyone have any ideas... The only thing that i could see is the belt on the Alternator has a bit of play in it, and maby its slipping, thus causing the battery not to charge.. Also i have been hearing squealing sounds now and then over the last week on and off.

If anyone can help me out i will supply the beer, or $$$ for your time.

So i just went down to the garage to look under the hood, it appears that the Alternator belt is so loose that i can almost squeeze it together, and its slipping on the reel of the alternator.

Does anyone know how to tighten the belt, or do i need a special tool.

Im living in the SW Garrison Woods area, if some one can help me out that would be very awsome.

Sorry I can't come and help you, I totally would if I was in Cal.
      Anyways here is a illustration:

The larger circle shows the bracket that controls the tension on the belt, the smaller circle shows the actual bolt that you need to turn to tension the belt. It is important to remember to loosen (don't remove) on the bottom side of the alternator that allows it to pivot.

      Hope this helps,

Is there a certain tightness that the belt needs to be or just as tight as other belts onthe car as a reference.

if you put a wrench on the bolt at the end of the pulley, you should still be able to slip the pully without too much effort. the old GM alternators used to have fins (like a fan) behind the pully, and the DIY deal was if you could take your finger in to the fins and just be able to make the pulely slip with your finger, it was good. No fins on yours, but kinda gives you an idea. Sorry... not a very accurate way of doing things, but I'm sure a real mech. will give an answer soon enough . I've always kinda done it by 'feel'.

I think the real answer is a measure of how much play there is in the belt back and fourth between 2 of the pulleys, but I don't know what it is.

            Alternator drivebelt tension
            Initial adjustment for new drivebelt . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .2.0 mm deflection under finger pressure at point midway between alternator and crankshaft pulleys

            Adjustment after 500 miles (750 km) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .5.0 mm deflection under finger pressure at same point

Found an MK2 maintenace manual here:
