  • The polo is a coming

According to Automotive News, Volkswagen has determined that Americans might like a Polo, so it's bringing the 80-hp subcompact Stateside in the not-too-distant future. Until now, the importation of the Polo was all conjecture, but now we have confirmation, straight from the horse's mouth. No specifics were given about the diminutive hatchback's U.S. debut, but Volkswagen Group of America CEO Stefan Jacoby confirmed they think the time is right. The automaker feels that Americans are more open to smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicles following the summer of high gas prices and the struggling economy.

The car, which would slot in between the Toyota Yaris and the larger Honda Fit in size, could be built at the company's plant in Puebla, Mexico. Although they've never sold anything smaller than the Rabbit/Golf in the States, VW thinks the Polo could help them reach their goal of tripling U.S. sales over the next ten years. The latest genereation of the Polo is set to debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March, but it's unclear if we will be getting that model or its predecessor. We just hope the Polo GTI version is in the cards.

I would be interested in a 4 door GTI, but probably will not be here by the time I look for a new car. However good news they are coming to their senses and bringing a smaller and cheaper car to the game.

Well, they need to do something to increase sales. The MKVI Golf has just been released in the UK and the price for the top line model is over Can$40,000. Granted the UK has the most expensive VW prices in Europe, but it's an indication of where the Golf is going even though the MKVI was designed to be "cheaper to manufacture" than the MKV.

The automaker realized that every other manufacturer had a car in that segment in the North American market, and figured they should finally get their **** together.
          Fixed.

good luck with the chinese model line coming in.
            V.W can't compete.
they will sell a few cars for the specific guys and that's it.
My Mother in Italy just bought a Euro Escort because the Polo was ridiculous in price,
not to mention the typical rude salesman issue.
Sorry guys i love the product but the price tag on this car is a joke.

It is not officially out yet so there are only a few renderings at this point, should be shown at the Geneva Auto show which I think is in March

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the current generation of Polo larger than the A1/mk1 Rabbit?

Secondly, where did the VW Fox fit in? Wasn't it a lower end car VW brought in as it took the Golf/Jetta more upmarket? Or would it not qualify as the sub-ultra-compact segment...

the fox was brought in as an entry level car, compact.
in 1987 the base unit was about 5900.00 bucks new.
the golf was about 11,000 and the jetta 13500.

sad part was,the fox replacement parts were almost double V.S the other line.

I still have my sales receipt for a 1987 Fox wagon. $10,458.
At the time, the big deal was that the base model was under $10,000.

And my 1986 Jetta GL was $13,380

How hard is a 2.0T engine swap? I can imagine for the low cost of a Polo plus a slightly used 2.0T you could end up with an awesome car.

If honda can sell $25k micro cars in north america (fit) why not vw? The new polo looks great, and will look even better as gas prices rebound.
