I am unsure what to do with this issue so I will post it.

Got into my 02 Jetta TDI today. Turned it on and heard a tick tick tick noise. Thought it to be my signal lights. My signal light switch was in the neutral position, the signal light signal in the dash board didnt light up, and the outside markers didnt blink...yet still heard the noise. So I tracked (the noise) down to the hazard switch. Its whats making the noise. I heated the car up but it did nothing. I would play with the signal light switchs to turn left/right and that didnt help. Any Ideas? I have had the issue where I blew the evaporated alcohol into the signal light switch mechanism to clean it out about 2 years ago. But in that case I would turn a corner and the switch would stick even if the switch arm was in teh neutral position. So this one is a mystery to me. Anyone else go through this? Whats the solution? Buy a new hazard switch? Its funny that it just started. Car hasnt been used in 2 weeks due to me having knee surgery.

Oh if I smack the dash board overtop the hazard switch it stops for a few seconds and then starts up again.

The hazard relay is a recall item, a dealer will replace it for free.

Spray some electrical contact spray in and around the signal arm on the steering collum. I had this problem a year ago. sprayed in there good, and it has not come back. Some do require the switch replaced but try this first.

yup. this topic is on here a few times. check if you've got the recall done, but I'd bet the electrical cleaner will work. It did for me. Been quite a while since that happened, and hasn't come back.

            Re: tick tick

Its not the hazard relay, tried that, and wasted money, jsut blow some compressed air in the turn signal stock

              Re: tick tick

Before paying any $$ for any switch or relay, you can hold the signal switch in either left or right position, not quite all the way though, slowly work it back forth till you hear that tick, it may be slow once or twice or it may fast like most concerns. if thats the case and you isolate it in the switch well then you have answered your concern. Note that price of switch is based on cruise and or steering wheel electrics, make sure you know.

i think it just ticks all the time, regardless of position. thats usually what seems to happen. can of cleaner, or apparently even air, is the cheapest thing to try first. Its worked for at least 3-4 people on these boards.

                    Re: tick tick

It was the switch and not the hazard. The sound comes from the hazard button. Anyway the solution was the compressed alcohol spray and then blew it all out with compressed air. Took a few trys and lots of switching the turn signal back and forth.

The symptoms were different (this time) then what they were 2 years ago when I last cleaned out using the same method.

                    Thanks once again everyone.
