    Re: 205s and cold starts

cold start with no plug was tough for me last night. but it was never that good with the oem injectors and no plugin either. I should probably check my timing one day, just to know if nothing else.

Static timing is fine and is advanced. It was the nozzles. They must not have good enough atomization as low flow for the cold starts. With the stock nozzles, it fires straight up unplugged at -30C.

Nozzles are from PO. Probably the Chinese ones. I'm sure PPs would be better. Now that they are in the Jetta, it gets similar longer cranks dead cold.

        Re: 205s and cold starts

So as an update. I replaced the 205s in the Jetta with PP357s. With the 205s (which were Chinese ones), the engine needed to crank to start below freezing. With the PP357s, it fires on first rotation of the engine every time regardless of the temperature.

I'd be interested to hear the cold start experience of anyone with PP520s.

It takes a couple turns for mine but it always has so I don't believe I saw much of a difference.

Do you start it outside unplugged ever? If so, then how cold?

It was unplugged today (although not all that cold). It starts but doesn't always like it. i remember last year when it was -50oC and I thought it was plugged in... the outlet didn't work so now I always use a light up cord.

Also remember neither of these two sets of injectors you have installed have been balanced. I had to plug mine in on the coldest of days to get it started, but that has only been a few times. Every other time it has started with the PP764's, grumpy a tad, but I always give the car 10 min warm up time when its that cold. Yeah I know about idling a TDi, but not idling it and pushing the engine when its cold is not good for the turbo either. Pick your battle, a 10 min warm up time at -25 makes the seat warmer all nice, and the car drivable right off the get go.
