Here is the stuff I use on all my Non PD TDi's in the family.

Here is a small discussion on TDICLUB about it

And the cheapest place in town is
http://www.milleragsupply.com/winter...esso-mobil.php
Although you have to buy a box instead of just one, which was ok by me.
Walmart's prices went up for the Esso stuff though, I think with all taxes and Enviro fee its like $35 for 4 liters. Miller I got it for $28.75 taxes and Enviro included per 4 liter jug.
I did have to plug in the car on Monday to get it going, but I also live at pretty much stony trail and there is no houses blocking the wind from the north. Every other day it has started, little grumpy, but I give it some warm up time.

Forgot to mention a box is 4x4 litersLast edited by Benjamin; 12-19-2008, 01:23 AM.Ben

No, Mobil1 0W-40 is not acceptable for a TDI as it is not a diesel engine oil.
The correct Mobil product is Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck 5W-40 or Mobil Delvac 1 5W-40. $45 for a 5 liter jug at Wallyworld.
As stated above, the best 0W-40 is the Esso stuff

Re: 0w40 oil, is this acceptable?
I might mention here that I had been using the Esso for years and doing oil analysis. I was getting around 3.1 ppm of wear metals per 1000 km, which is pretty normal. When the price went up, I switched to the Mobil TDT. Just finished my second fill and the oil analysis showed 2.1 ppm / 1000 km. That is a 30% reduction in wear metals.

Re: 0w40 oil, is this acceptable?
Which season and driving style was the one analysis done for? I am not beating down on your results they sound great, but I would not jump ship until I saw a few analysis. Its funny when I go down and get the oil mobil 1 and the esso stuff are sold side by side.
I don't know, I pay $1 more a liter for the Esso stuff by getting it at the Miller Supply and that means a $35 oil change for me.
I just bought the New Total 507/504 for the wifes Passat TDi and that probably cost me $12.00 a liter. Not the cheapest, but in the end a better oil that will hopefully get some better millage for her.Ben

Re: 0w40 oil, is this acceptable?
I was just reading up on this today and came across this thread:
http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread...=136590&page=3
More specifically Tornado Red's Post:
When you refer to something with a VW 505.00 spec, you probably mean M1 0w40. Despite the VW rating, it is not as good as Mobil Delvac 5w40 synthetic or Mobil 1 5w40 synthetic. The 0w40 is subject to shearing -- the additives that thicken it so it has a 40-weight viscosity have been known to "break down".... towards the end of the drain interval, the oil is not protecting as well. Delvac and its M1 5w40 kin are able to stay in grade far longer, typically longer than the 10k mile interval recommended in your owners manual.

There was nothing wrong with the Esso analysis, it has been great. The Mobil analysis was just excellent.

You can get the new CJ-4 Shell at Crappy Tire for $30 per jug. That seems to be the best deal around ATM.
