i left my 15w50 near the garage door last winter last year when doing my engine swap. went to move it and it was like there was a rock in there. i poured some into a yoghurt container and it was unreal how slowly it moved, was like molasses

What is the difference between the Red top and the Yellow top?

Yellow top is a deep cycle and the red top is general purpose. TDIs usually use the yellow top and gassers use the red top or if you are a gasser with a big stereo then use the yellow top.

All this talk of batteries...starting my TDI was parked outside and plugged in for 8 hours and it took 4 cycles of the glowplugs and it just barely started. Tiguan was parked outside for 4 hours (blockheaters are not available yet for the Tigs) and it fired up on the first try but sounded strained.

My TDI has been parked outside since Friday......I have to drive it tomorrow and I am not confident that it will start.

Yeah they are amazing...
I had similar battery problems last year and I have a pan heater but -40 for a month will kill even the best 4 year old battery.
I have had experience with cdn tire batteries and as much as the 3 year warranty sounds sweet your car will NEVER die in the cdn tire parking lot, and their batteries DIE.
my friend and I have both had the red tops for our cars for the past 2 winters and I have nothing but good things to say about them. I paid somewhere around $200.

ohhh IMHO block heaters just don't cut it. your crank isn't trying to turn through your coolant so why heat your coolant. Not that its bad, it just makes way more sense to go with a pan heater when dealing with low temps and peanut butter oil. Plus any car (even your s4's and tiguans) can accept a pan heater.

I too don't think the TDI will start tomorrow. I have a beatup 1994 Ford Ranger sitting on the street in front of my house that hasn't been started since Nov. or even plugged in. Tonight it fired up on the second try. Then I let it idle for 30 min while I dug it out. For good measure I plugged it in. The TDI is inside and plugged. Which will start tomorrow???

just let the TDI cycle the plugs a few times, it should turn over after that

Costco has Optima D35 yellow top for $168.99. Costco's numbering is called group 22. I checked on www.optimabatteries.com and that is what is recommended for the 1.8T and 1.9TDI. I took a picture of it to remind me when I needed a new one. May just replace it over the Christmas break anyway.

wrong positioned terminals . i sell a lot of these bateries guys its a special optima for vws see my above post . also the optimas from costco wallmart and other non interstate dealers dont provide the three year no hassel exchange as they do from thoes that come from us . and interstate wont cover the optimas from wallmart or costco because they are old stock thats why they get them cheap . three year unconditional not pro rated warrenty from genuine optima dealers . dont save 20 bucks for the wrong batery get a sc34r optima red top they test to 789 cca . (stock only 550cca)

if you have a decent battery, and run the plugs like has been said, it should start. won't be happy about it... but it should start.

Yeah my engine temp actually made it up to the second level today, must have been a lot warmer, the last few days even after an hour I was still only at level one (level 3 is normal temp). All I can say is thanks for seat heaters and Canada Goose parkas!

I cycled my glow plugs 3 times yesterday and started it every 4 hours while outside at work, and then back to the parkade for the evening.
