Start Clunk

Hey all, the Girlfriends 03 Jetta 2.0 makes a mean clunk about 2 of every three times you start it. it happens just as you turn the key and you can almost feel it in your seat. once its started it runs just fine... any ideas on what this is????????

does the engine turn before the clunk, at the same time or only after, does it delay the first turn of the engine when it does clunk?

guess 1 -> Starter motor clutch

Clunk = right when the engine actually starts as soon as you let off the key

then id deffo go back to starter motor as a first guess but lets see if anyone else has an idea

Starter motor. Time to replace it before it fails totally.

The internal starter gears are starting to move around most likely due to worn out bearings. Replace it before it totally seizes up.
