  • Damn TDI

Stopped off to get some fast food. Decided to go inside cause the d/t was lined up. Came back out in less than 5 minutes. Now my TDI won't start.#*!?$@ Now I'm trying to figure out if the fuel gelled or what. BTW it cranks like a mofo but I don't want to kill the battery or the starter.

    Re: Damn TDI

Probably a stuck EGR. Fuel won't gel, not cold enough, besides warm fuel is also returned to the tank...

Word to that. See if the egr flap is stuck closed, you may need a de-carb to boot too.

        Re: Damn TDI

That was my second thought. When I bought the TDI in Aug 04 it ran fine. First snow 3 months later the EGR was stuck fast and the intake was clogged to the point you could barely push a pencil through. Got it cleaned out and it was fine. This gives me the excuse to put that Racepipe (EGR delete) I got a few months back.

Volkstech I think it was you guys who cleaned it out for me. My EGR looked worse than the one in the display case in your service area.

Did you get it running again? Your right, it might be time for the racepipe and egr delete.

got it towed. will look at it in the morning. I've only had to use AMA twice in the last 5 years. It has sure paid for itself.

                ever heard of runaway engine??
keep the EGR or be willing to buy an engine if it ever takes off.
but then again whats 8-9 thousand dollars to a racer.

                  Re: Damn TDI

Engine runaway can destroy an engine, does not mean it happens every time.
My dad blew my turbo this past summer and had the engine runaway on him and stopped the car with it in gear and the brakes. Hard on the clutch/tranny I know but when you have only that option its better then nothing.
In terms of the engine, runs just as good as before if not better with the new turbo.
Like I said at the start, engine run away can kill your engine, just its not a 100% fact.

                    Re: Damn TDI

You can use a blocking plate on the cooling side and still keep the full function to stop runaway can you not?

tdi's in the 90's, in mk3's i believe did not have the flap, no problems there? also, i read mk4's with flaps have had runaways too... i think its just for the smoothness in shutting the car off, that's all.

                          Re: Damn TDI

Are you guys smoking dope? The only purpose that egr valve flap has is to prevent a harsh shut-down. it's called an "anti-shudder valve". The vehicle is shut down by killing the fuel at the pump by use of a electric solenoid. So put the race pipe on and delete the egr. Not only will it help with the coking but it will also stop those annoying no-starts from the anti-shudder valve being stuck closed.

The only draw back is that you may get a CEL because of incorrect egr flow because you have deleted the egr.

Yes it's a sham, the only way a diesel runs away is if it gets a separate fuel source other than the diesel fuel it runs on. i.e engine oil from a blown turbo being fed into the boost path. I'm not saying it can't happen but you'd have a better chance getting laid by Rihanna then you would having a runaway MK4 diesel.
