Re: Anyone up for putting a Zerostart in my GTI?

Also, just as a FYI, several of us have installed water-pipe insulation tubes in the front grill to block off the cold air coming in - was a suggestion on TDIclub and a few of us here have done it with great success...

Which 1500W model? Did you "accidentally" get the one with the thermostat?

If not, see how hot the heater is getting. If really hot, you have a circulation problem.

it was 330-5003, superceded by 300-8003, and no, it didnt have a checkvalve...

seems to be the same symptoms that aussiefishy (sp?) had with his...

would an air bubble be the cause?

I suppose it may have been one with a thermostat, but I dont think so. Maybe I'll try running it for a few hours longer, just to see how it reacts...

I tried 2 hours over the weekend. Not enough. Since Monday I have set it for 3 hours before I leave and it seems decent. May try 4 this weekend if the temps go below -25.

Ran it an extra hour AND installed the foam tubes in the grill + one happy Golf, up to temperature after a few blocks... might have to adjust if it really gets cold again, but for now, I am happy...

Would there be a benefit in putting the pipe insulation around the zerostart hoses too?

Re: Anyone up for putting a Zerostart in my GTI?

I did 3 hours with the zerostart and oil pan heater - car was warm and toasty in no time. I do have a garage connected to the house though, so it is warmer in there to start with.

Rick, I'd say likely no appreciable difference in doing that unless your car is facing into the wind or something. That said, it can't hurt to try. A good experiment if nothing else and a cheap one.

Re: Anyone up for putting a Zerostart in my GTI?

My 5000 series heater died on me so I am going to Greggs to get the 1500w one today.
After looking at the current draw of the 1500w I might end up going with the 1000w instead. Might make plugging it in at work a lot easier to deal with.

Re: Anyone up for putting a Zerostart in my GTI?

ok, i started to put this in today, got the heater mounted in the bay ok but am struggling with getting to the hose connection point on the right hand side of the engine. i can run the one form the oil heater ok but cant reach into the side of the engine to get to that end of the hose.

I think the main problem is i cant get under the car as i dont have any ramps.

Is anyone who has put one in before willing to help me out tomorrow (Sunday) please ? ill gladly drive somewhere to meet up. i have the kit with hoses from Fostheater and the vw coolant etc just need a bit of help

                  Thanks

You shouldn't have to get under the car to do the right side hose. To get in there you should remove the battery, battery tray and maybe the airbox to get your hands in there. I'd lend a hand but going skiing tomorrow.

                          Hey thanks Rob,

I was going to try Darkmans suggestion on Sunday but managed to fall on the ice while walking the dog and screwed my back up. Cant lean over the car to finish the job at the moment so it will just have to wait i guess. ill let you know if i get back at it.

                          Thanks both for the support.

Re: Anyone up for putting a Zerostart in my GTI?

I have installed two 1500 watt versions in the last month in both my brothers TDi's. DJ's I actually let him do most of the work while I provided insight while I insulated the garage.
Two things that are important when installing these are height and how direct the pipe from the top is. DJ's because of the big FMIC on the car had to more his farther away from the normal location closer to where the horn is in the front bumper. I have had both brothers plug theirs in and DJ's doesn't heat up as well as my youngest brothers Tim does. Same heater, different locations and maybe a different height as well.
I have the 750 watt TDiheater version and even on the very cold days I can plug the car in for 1.5 hours that sits on the road and it starts up like its a 0`C day. The temp gauge does not fly over to 90`c, but the car starts a lot nicer and it is a lot easier on the engine as well.
Kordain sorry to hear about the fall, I have fallen as well and yeah a bad back really blows balls.

Hey thanks for offering, im down in the SW in Bridlewood next to 22x road. Not the sort of place you tend to just be in the area for or just passing by unless you live in Okotoks My back is almost right again now so ill probably be having a go at it again one evening later this week or latest this weekend. If your free i wouldnt mind some pointers, im sure it would only take an hour when youre familiar with what to do and where it all connects.

                                cheers
