Re: Anyone up for putting a Zerostart in my GTI?

if you're car is running properly it shouldn't have to be plugged in. i never once plugged mine in and it always started no matter how cold. unless you want the heat... which i'm too lazy. i just create heat with my right foot haha

i wonder if in california something exists that you stick into your car and keeps the inside cool while its parked outside on hot days

I bought my heater from http://www.frostheater.com/ and it works awesome. It was a little tricky to install.

I installed a zerostart heater in my TDI 2 weeks ago....Took me about 3 hours but I had to fight the belly pan off and pull the battery. The fit was fairly tight in the limited space available. VW also now sells a coolant heater kit that includes the heater and the preformed hoses but it is only a 500 watt heater and it lists for $180. I paid $60 for the zerostart 1000 watt heater and a few bucks for the Ford Mustang hose (it has the correct bends etc). I followed this guide for my install...

Rico you should be able to do this no problem. I have done 2 in in Jetta's, first one took 1.5 hours, next one I did when I swapped the engine in my car. Pretty simple, remove one hose, install 2 more, and mount the heater. You also have to run the plug, but as long as you don't have a FMIC you should be fine.

cdnalpina and I did 2 installs in our TDIs yesterday. Here is the parts list

                    1x 1500w Temro 8000 series heater $69 at Greggs Distributors (part# 330-8003)
                    2x of bulk 5/8" heater hose @ $1 a foot at NAPA
                    1x Unicoil $7.99 at NAPA
                    1x 5/8" upper heater hose with 90* bend (24" then 90* bend then 4") $13.99 at PartSource

Total cost $93 or if you want to pay $125.90 USD shipped go here: http://www.frostheater.com. I think they only sell the 750W one.

                    Any questions?

If you ask for an upper heater hose for a 1983 2.3cyl 4 banger turbo Mustang that is the one.

Another thing. If it wasn't for my CCV catchcan I could have done mine in 30 minutes. And if you aren't quick with the hose swap you may be heading to the stealership for some G12.

My pleasure - it was a good TDI session!

Rico, if you are not into installing the zerostart, pm me and we can work something out. Would be easiest if you came out to my place as I have all the tools etc needed and spare bits in case there is something we miss. Also the garage is insulated and can be heated up toasty in no time.

                                Cheers,
