Well... here's how the story goes.

With the newer GTI's -- you get either the 1.8T @ 180HP -- or the 24v VR6 @ 201HP. Both are great motors... but people pick one or the other for different reasons.

You have just purchased a 1999.5 2.0L GTI with an 8-valve naturally aspirated 4-cylinder. At the wheels -- here in Calgary, they make 94HP and 107 ft/lb of torque. Now that's stock -- it's not a super quick car -- but it's not a super slow car either. The aftermarket industry caters HUGE to the 2.0L motor... commonly referred to as 2.slo among Volkswagen owners. You are able to purchase intake systems, chips, bolt on superchargers, cams, different pistons, different heads and blocks -- almost everything!

Once you get your car -- drive it and let us know how you like it. From there -- the modding begins. There are several 2.0L owners here on NewVeeDub -- near the end of the day, I'm sure this thread will be alive and vibrant with fellow 2.0L's owners discussing mods and other performance enhancers.

yeah, i realized when i bought it, that it wasnt going to be "fast" but quick is good enough for now, as long as it has potential for speed then im willing to spend the $$

after buying it though and hearing some opinions, i was worried that it wouldnt even be worth modding, but im up for the challenge

on another note, the dealership just called and said i have to wait till tomorow to pick it up... argh! thats what i get for talking them in to putting a new windsheild on

Dude -- forget what other people think or say. Even with a 300HP car that runs 12 second's in the quarter-mile -- there is ALWAYS someone in front of you bragging about their 500HP car that runs 10 seconds flat. Forget them. This car is YOUR car -- do what you want -- do it how you want. If you want to supercharger -- wicked -- more power and it's rare to see a lot of 2.0L owners with chargers -- makes you that more unique. Buy nitrous and install it -- buy cams -- or buy an intake with a chip.

It's your car -- a driver was wanted -- a driver was found.

Congrats on your new car -- can't wait to see the pictures!

              Great 2.0 post Peter!

If you want to make your car look or feel unique, inside or out, then you can do all of the same things to the 2.0L that you can to all of the other VW cars.

In terms of performance, you should first decide how you like the car. If you are totally satisfied with the way your car drives then you're in great shape with the 2.0L. If there is something you would like to upgrade, its always possible.

A great deal of "performance" can be achieved without touching the engine. Better suspension or tires can really make a difference in handling characteristics. This might be something to consider if you want the car to feel sportier.

In general if you want only small gains from your engine then you will easilly be able to bolt on some mods. If you want large gains, you would be looking at a turbo or supercharger: these systems would be fairly expensive. With the 2.0L there is not really a "middle ground".

Hope this helps! Lets get some 2.0L owners posting up!

oh man peter i would LOVE to see your car, the last time i saw it was last spring at the track when you first got it, the mods were minor and it was still pimp...

i would be up for meeting you tonight but the dealer called me today and said i have to wait till tomorow for it because i talked them into replacing the windsheild when i bought it and they said it has to sit, because of the weather or something :(

                      definitely some other time though...

btw i noticed your car on the c1 website ... i'd be proud to have my car on the local vw tuner's homepage... way too go!
