A few months ago now when I was dropping the the 1.8T and Transmission back into the car the speedometer gear popped off the cable and fell into the transmission. Yay.
I tried a few things to get it out but nothing worked. So after talking to a few people and searching around for info I decided to leave it in there, it's only plastic right, bad decision...
Driving around the Rabbit yesterday the gear found its way to block 3rd gear from engaging. So today I got into taking my first transmission apart.
Started with this:
Took the K-Brace out, disconnected axles and mounts:
An hour later and tada:
Drained the transmission oil, no traces of the red speedometer gear....So far
Got the transmission on a table and took the shift linkage and rear engine mount bracket off:
Took the 5th gear cover off and look what I find:
Tons of little red bits from the gear, lame..
Next I got the gear selector out:
Took the reverse switch out:
Select 5th and Reverse at the same time so you can unscrew the bolt holding the 5th gear assembly down, you can do this since the gear slector has been removed:
5th gear assembly removed:
This was hiding underneath it
Started on the drive axle flange:
Ill continue tomorrow, need to pick up a few tools before I can continue
For a more thorough instruction I went to this site, very helpful:
