I don't even see why the DV needs to be serviced.

I thought about trying the shimming but its too much hassle for not really any benefit.

Actually, the prime situation would be servicing your DV every time you change your oil. Shimming might not be that much of a benefit, but keeping your DV running well and mainly not sticking is a must, and DVs do stick, more than you really notice or think. If you at any time hear a "fluttering" noise, like an open loop DV (BOV), your DV is sticking and needs to be serviced immediately. Sometimes you have to listen closely though, especially if you don't have a CAI. But servicing components of your car just doesn't seem like a waste of time to me...you don't get a DV to increase performance, it is one of the many mods that insures your car is running in tip top shape, being foolish enough to think that such a small but vital part of the 1.8t system (one of the keys to the closed loop Bosch Motronic system), is not a cause for persitant concern is ridiculous. This attitude is just asking for something to happen to your car. Laziness gets you nowhere but the shop or limp mode fast.

Wow! great info Eugene@Torquesteer, would you mind sending me some media reguarding swapping the DV. My DV seems to be honking off and on and I thinking about picking up a forge.

            Thanks

I will put together a basic how to by this weekend with a few pictures, it isn't hard at all, the only thing that maybe confusing would be the reverse DV installation, I will post a picture of it in a few...

that is a picture of the original installation, before I reversed it.

Many people were skeptical about the reverse DV, but that is how the longitudinal VAG engines have their DV setup stock, such as the B5 platform, including the Passat. I will get a picture of the reversed DV soon.

If you look at the first big picture, the darker spot is where the nipple rubs against the engine cover and actually "files" down the rubber piping...which is obviously bad... there is no way around this except..

                      #1. remove the cover...
#2. modify the cover to allow it
                      #3. reverse the DV

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask.

Nothing... it just means you don't have to replace that rubber hose all the time if you keep your engine cover on.

OK, most likely this happened after you serviced it...what you need to do is just service it again, this time maybe being a little more generous with the grease, and making sure the "gaskets" are in place and properly sealing the unit. After you do that, try the vaccuum test again, make sure that the piston is completely compressed, put your finger on the nipple, and see if it holds. When I first got my DV I had that same problem, even brand new... after servicing it, it fixed the problem!

Most likely that is the cause of your CAI problem.

Hmmm it seems when i put the pen inside the DV the piston is sloppy and wobbling side to side
