  • I think my DV is starting to go

    Hey everyone,

Just want to confirm some sounds that I heard today with you guys. My car is making the infamous "honking" sound that blown DV's but i can barely hear it does that mean its only a small hole or is it always a quiet honking sound? The sound can only be heard around 2000rpm, but the thing that I'm puzzled with is if it really is my DV why can I still hear the psssssssssttt sound it makes when it releases the higher pressure and why haven't I felt any power loss?

Input would be greatly apprieciated to confirm my noise.

    Thanks
    Bryce

Weird. I was starting to think that the whole DV issue was invented by the aftermarket DV manufacturers. I have never actually heard a DV fail. Really I have no way to diagnose this, which is the whole reason I replaced my own DV- so that I would never need to ask myself the questions are are asking yourself right now...

Someone in the club might be able to lend you a spare DV... I used to have one but then at one of the meets I passed it around and it 'disappeared'.

That'd be great if someone could help me out, I've never replaced a DV before and have no idea how to. Also I find it weird that the DV is giving problems with only 23k on the car, could the noise be something else?

I'm at around 8K and already I hear the honking DV. It happens at part throttle (prob 1/2) and happens once in a blue moon. I'm not sure if the dv is busted or if it just in that quescient area of operation where it doesn't know which way to go. open or close.

Neil, you may be right about the DV not knowing what to do, because driving home tonight from work everything sounded normal. Also the car drives smooth and there's no loss of power so maybe it just one of those flukie things, but I guess I'll see if it gets any worse in the next few days.

            Thanks for the ideas/help guys

This is not true, DVs do fail, in fact they fail quite often, especially with typical mods such as a chip etc!

Now they did start using the same Bosch DV as the TT uses in 2002 with the AWP engines. This reduced a lot of the DV failing. If you don't believe me, call your dealership and ask one of the techs that had been there for a while how many people came in with DV problems with the AWD and AWW engines.

During many load tests, the Forge DV was the top performing DV, especially when shimmed. The Hyperboost DV was actually one of the lower performing DVs, even lower than the stock diaphragm based DV. Between the Forge and the Bailey, I would recommend the Forge based on the fact that the Forge can be serviced.

Now as far as installing a new DV, if you guys are really interested, I have lots of pictures of my new DV installed (reverse installed to prevent the nipple from digging through the hose since it rubs the engine cover) which will help you tremendously.

Does the reverse install have any side-effects? Did you shim your Forge?

No, the reverse installation has no side-effects, a few individuals said they felt a gain on their butt dyno, but I don't believe it, it was more of a placebo effect if anything. You will have two choices with the new DV, either take off your engine cover, or reverse install it.

                  Yes, I shimmed my Forge...

Are you asking what shimming is?

It is when you place washers at the bottom of where the spring meets the piston, or where the spring meets the bottom of the DV's valve. It creates more tension for the spring, and makes the DV work a little better.

this will just make it work harder right... what size washer is acceptable? this will work on a 006

Yes, it will work on the 006 and 007, just take your DV to the hardware store, and get the one that fits your DV exactly, it shouldn't be hard to find. To be frank though, we aren't talking about a difference that you would be able to feel, it was just a measured difference (100ths of a second difference etc). But if you are servicing your DV anyways, it certainly wouldn't hurt.
