  • VAG-cables vs VAG-COM

What is the difference between the VAG-cables brand and the Ross-Tech brand OBDII cable other than the price? Need feedback. I am thinking you get what you pay for. I don't want my ECU to be bricked by an inferior product.

i *think* the plain one will read and clear most codes, but will not let you record and graph the results for sensors, and will not let you in to the adaptations to change any settings.

The Rosstech ones have extra hardware that unlocks extra features of their software.

You may not get the k-line protection on a cheap one either, which I don't think will screw up the car, but can bugger the laptop if you have a bad aftermarket stereo install.

There are a few airbag controllers around 2000-2001ish that can give a permanent airbag warning light if the controller is scanned with an older cable and an older version of software. I think the new cable ross-tech cable wont do this, but I also think they have a software safety built in now, so this probably isn't an issue either way anymore.

when you buy it from rosstech you get thier cable and the registered vagcom software

the cables from ebay are the same things basically and you get a shareware/demo of the vagcom software

There is also quality in the connector to the OBD port itself. Although I have recently learned that Ross-tech is presently using crappy connectors again.

OK I have decided to go with the real thing, Ross-Tech. Now where to buy? I called Sensolutions out in Springbank which is about 5 minutes from my house and they don't deal with Ross-Tech anymore. Anywhere else in Calgary? Edmonton? Red Deer?

VAG-Cables was just started by my wife as a hobby. She has connections in Asia for these cables and software. Don't be fooled by the price, it's good stuff. Perfect for the DIY-Guy.

                From the ross-tech distributor list:
                http://www3.ns.sympatico.ca/roseland/VAG-COM.htm
I have heard good things about roseland before so I think it would be good to order from them. Depending on what you want to do though, you might want to check out some of Dave's cables.

depending on what you want it for 54.00 bucks for just scanning or as high as
                    800.00 for full programing.
Davey i'am waiting for your results and what your cable/programming can do.
