  • TDI review

Yesterday went car shopping with a friend and looked at a 09 Jetta TDI at SCFC
The interior and the rest are the same as a normal Jetta so I wont comment on that.
The engine is great doesnt even feel like a deisel super peppy 140 hp 236 ft torqe It had the auto tranny with sport mode shifted great was really impressed with it. just a small review of it .

Did you notice lag? Like when you punch the gas, you wait almost a full second, then it goes? I wasn't sure if it was the auto or what. (I have a turbo and this was more than just low power lag). But I totally agree, the thing felt just as fast as my 1.8 on normal driving. I was very impressed with the power.

The auto's are the dsg...at least according to vw.ca's revamped website. Curious if they have the paddles on the steering wheel like my GTI or manual +/- only with the shifter?

My GTI is the same way sometimes. I press the go pedal and it takes a half to a full second for anything to happen in D mode. S mode is a little better.

This is my only complaint about the DSG.

So I heard only DSGs will be available at first. Maybe Derek can confirm. Also how long would a wait be on a base 5 sp manual if a guy wanted one.

There wa a slight lag but that was if you really stomped on it I would say close to the 1.8T. It did not have paddles on the wheel just +/- at the shifter but like U said really impressed by it !

Well I was interested in the wagon tdi, but the wait looks to be into next year. Manual is a 6 speed, the tip/auto was what the tester car had. Best you can do is test one out, and put in your order.

I think its the pesky drive by wire throttle combined with the dsg that causes the delay...one of my only complaints with the dsg as well

No one will have one yet. Every dealer has one to drive and take orders from. Actual cars wont arrive until sept -oct depending. And yes, the manuals are 6 speed. DSG being the auto tranny option without paddle shifts!

                        Re: TDI review

IMHO, paddles are overrated. If you'd ever driven one you'd know what I mean. Granted the paddle shifting car I drove was nothing more than a family sedan, it left me with a serious "wtf" feeling.

I can't wait to drive the new TDI either though. I'm also anxious to see what the aftermarket options will be for this before too long. I'd imagine that VW would have added a beefier clutch, hopefully something that's even compatible with the original TDI.

Hehehe, I have driven one and currently do drive one
It injects a lot of fun into a car you can also leave in 'D' during rush hour, especially one with a semi-sporting character (i.e. my gti)
