    Re: Radar Detectors in Calgary

what do they typically use to snap a picture of a car that runs the light? radar? laser? some other motion sensor? just take pictures regardless of whether there is a car there?

There are wires in the ground, one at the entrance to the intersection, and one almost at the other end. It takes a picture at both points, proving you entered on the red and went through (rather than just edging forward enough to trip the first wire).

Since they have 2 wires and they know the distance between them, it's sort of "free" to calculate the speed of every car going by. Most red light tickets have the speed listed just for fun anyway.

Last I heard was that it was back in for more review as several alderman had clear heads for once and felt it was a cash grab. But it's not dead.
