Re: Torqe Value for front right wheel bearing?
As per ze Bentley for MKIV's
Vehicles with 12-point nut - Tighten 12-point nut to 200 Nm (147.5 ft lb) and loosen 1/2 turn. - Turn wheel hub 180 . Tighten again with: 50 Nm (37 ft lb) plus an additional 60
Vehicles with hex. bolt - Tighten hex bolt to 250 Nm (184.4 ft lb) plus an additional 1/4 turn 90 and then loosen 1/2 turn. - Turn wheel hub 180 . Tighten again to: 250 Nm (184.4 ft lb) plus an additional 1/4 turn 90 Note: To tighten 12-point nut/hex bolt we recommend the angle measuring wrench V.A.G1756 .
If an angle measuring wrench is not available, then tighten 12-point nut using following method.
Vehicles with 12-point nut - Lower vehicle until the wheels touch ground. - Tighten 12-point nut to 200 Nm (148 ft lb) and loosen 1/2 turn. - Tighten 12-point nut to 50 Nm (37 ft lb). - Mark one of the 12-points on the nut with a line - arrowA - . - Mark 2nd line - arrowB - on the edge of the wheel hub as shown in illustration. - Turn 12-point nut until both points - A - and - B - align.
As per the Bentley, MKIII
Tighten 12-point nut.
Tighten 12-point nut using angle measuring wrench (VAG 1756 is recommended)
Tightening torque: 50 Nm (37 ft lb) plus additional 30 turn
If an angle measuring wrench is not available:
- Lower vehicle until wheel touches ground.
- Tighten 12-point nut to 200 Nm (148 ft lb) and then loosen one turn.
- Tighten 12-point nut to 50 Nm (37 ft lb).
- Mark one point with a line (arrow -A-).
- Make second mark (arrow -B-) on edge of wheel hub above next point.
The distance from one point on the 12-point nut to the next point is 30.
- Turn 12-point nut until both marks are aligned.
NOTE: There is a different procedure for MKIII vehicles with non-compressed splines (requiring locking fluid), but the Bentley mentions that the compressed splines are on plus suspension cars, and that any replacements are sold with new hubs, blah, blah, blah.
If you want, I can email them to you in a PDF. I would probably have to say that the Passat is going to be pretty close to the MKIII VR6 Jetta.Last edited by dubCanuck1; 08-02-2008, 01:45 AM.1989 Golf Diesel (2001 TDI powered before teh apocalypse)

we do cv shafts on a regular basis and don't replace the bearings..
you obviously have no concept in what is involved.
why replace something if you don't have to.
i'd be more leery if someone tried to upsell you a bearing when doing a shaft.

Re: Torqe Value for front right wheel bearing?
I've heard from 3 different shops that when you change the CV shaft it can "upset" the bearing and when you put in the new shaft it doesent seat quite right, all this made sence to me and their timelines for a bearing starting to growl after were dead on. so hearing the same thing from 3 different shops and seeing as they all say the same thing as for how long the bearing will last kinda made me belive them.
I'm sorry for making a comment relaying the information I was given and belived to be correct, I've had the car for like a week and your right, I have absolutly no clue what is involved in changing them. I guess I thought the point of a forum was to learn these things.2001 Jetta Wolfsburg Edition, APR 91/93, K&N Cold Air

Or roll the car off the hoist with no joint in place and the bearing seperates.
Some VW's came with locktight on the splines those are mandatory bearing replacement.

Re: Torqe Value for front right wheel bearing?
yes, manual does mention that.
Ensure wheel bearing are not loaded with 12-point nuts loose.
If bearings are loaded by vehicles weight and 12-point nuts are loose wheel bearings will be stressed and their life expectancy reduced.put.......put.......
.... ... .. .
