  • 1.8T Died, now won't start.

    Hi all,

I posted on the Tex, but I know there's a few VW techs who frequent on here, so I'm hoping they can chime in as well.

Helping a fellow dubber out. He's running a 2001 Golf, 1.8T and when this started, he was driving home. Slowed down and the car just completely died. He tried to start it, but couldn't get it going again.

I did a VAG Scan and the details are below. Since he can't start the car, some of the errors might be simply because the car isn't running.

When he does try to start the car, turning on the ignition (not starting yet), there's a high-pitched whine coming from the passenger side of the car. I'm wondering if this might be the fuel pump.

When he does try to start the car, it sounds like the starter shaft is turning, but not turning over the engine. So, starting isn't a possibility for this reason.

He's going to pull the starter and have a look, but I was wondering if I might solicit some feedback on the next most likely "heart stopper" out of this VAG scan.

Looking at the scan results....lots of low voltages. How is the battery? Checking the resting voltage as well as when you crank it may be helpful.

I've actually done two scans. The first one showed all the same as this one, except the "Terminal 30" error wasn't there and there was something about the ABS.

So, the owner put the battery on a charger for a couple days and the charger said the battery was fine. I had thought the same thing originally.

this sounds like maybe a timing belt broken? if that happens it can whine as its only turning the pistons but not the valves and also against no compression, coz the valves are knackered from piston collisions. I hope it isnt for his sake

I havent looked at the scan info coz it means nothing to me, im an old fashioned mech

Re: 1.8T Died, now won't start.

Dub do a quick check on the belt. The whine is it from the front or the back? The fuel pump is in the back, so the whine would have to be behind you for that to be it.
Honestly check the belt, have somebody turn the engine over and you check the belt. If the belt is running around, then try jumping the car with some good cables and your tdi. I have seen a battery sit on a charger for days, then when a load was put on the battery it just crapped out.
Good luck, hopefully its not the belt.

The engine doesn't turn whatsoever. I'll give the belt a look and turn it over by hand.

Re: 1.8T Died, now won't start.

if the engine doesnt even try to turn over then it could be the gearing in the starter motor that has seized or jammed and the whine is the motor spinning freely. Ive seen this happen a couple of time before but not on a dub but that doesnt mean anything. if its a manual gearbox, try bump starting in second gear.

if the belt is broken it can seem like the engine isnt turning becuase nothing moves except for the pistons and they have no resistance due to no compression so it sounds effortless and doenst shake the engine etc

you can try an old timers trick and get a length of wood put it onto the engine in various places and to your ear and listen around different areas to find out where the noise is coming from.

if the stater motor is not turning either (it could be the fuel pump whine your hearing, it could be the normal whine but sounding extra loud in the lack of noise from everything else) this would most likely be the starter motor solenoid has failed or jammed and is not triggering the starter, you may be able to hear a faint click when you turn the key to the start position. some times giving it a love tap will persuade it to work

let us know whwat you find.

Re: 1.8T Died, now won't start.

Isn't the 1.8T an interference engine? Is so, wouldn't a broken timing belt mean a whole lot of noise as the valves met the pistons? Also, when it originally died, it just shut off, it didn't make any loud noises, backfire, or seize in gear, which is what I would suspect for a broken Timing Belt.

Even if it's not, I am sure, even with no compression, I would still hear the air wooshing through the valve chambers when the pistons go up and down.

Owner's going to check on the T-Belt and the manual turnover.

I got a suggestion to look at the crank and cam angle sensors too.

Re: 1.8T Died, now won't start.

ive only seen it happen on a ford and a rover, both times the nosie of bending around half the valve rods wasnt heard and no sudden stops or seizing as the exhaust ports were left open thus no compression. it only hits em once n bends them so they dont seat right n cant move anymore so you may not. beides it may be the starter motor issue I mentioned

if it was only a sensor then the battery/starter would still be turning the engine over it jsut wouldnt fire

Yeah. We're starting with the starter and will work from there.

m gunna put this out there a starter wont cause it to stall . and when the valves "hit" it usually quiet

I'm pretty certain that the starter will reveal the next problem once it's taken care of.

Consensus seems to be timing belt. One of the codes is a cam position sensor, no? That's a pretty big clue.

If you put a new starter on an engine with no timing belt and interference, isn't there a risk of stripping the new one too? I'd confirm the timing belt is ok before doing anything else.

                              Timing belt.

The simplest explanation is usually the correct one.

When a timing belt goes the car just stops, there are no backfires, nothing, just stops. If it's in gear, it'll freewheel since there is no compression to work against. The starter will spin the engine like it's a sewing machine (actually it'll sound a bit like a sewing machine) no air going through the engine, no MAF reading (one of your error codes). Cam timing error code, the rest of the codes are just because it's a very broken engine.

Replace the head (at least a 'few' valves - 20 valve head (ouch)), pistons (they'll most likely have nice dents on them - which are stress risers that will eventually lead to broken pistons if you don't replace them) and while you're in there, throw in a water pump (since it'll also be worn out by this time).

                              Good luck!
