My mk4 jetta has been the most reliable vehicle i have ever owned. I am curious as to how many of you basically carry stock of ignition coils and wheel bearings. These are the only things i have had to change other than fluids and what not in the last year. 3 ignition coils and 2 wheel bearings (about to be a third if my foots feeling is correct)

Coils, always.
Wheel bearings? That's a new one. I'm at 110,000 km and I haven't noticed any grief with them and I've done some pretty horrible things with my GTI, including plowing over a large square curb head on at over 40 km/h and somehow not wrecking any suspension bits.

my golf is at 180k and ive had it fior a year, two coil packs and the rear bearings need replacing. jsut gotta get some spare cash :(Eric..

If you run non-standard offset or use spacers, bearings can go yearly. Stick with ET35, they should be good for 100K+ easy.
I carry 2 coils. Haven't had to use them since the original replacement back when it was an epidemic. Geoff

Neon GTI, ide wait for them to go bad, as long as when they do you get it fixed right away i dont "think" its a problem. You can feel a vibration when you accelerate when there going bad. (at least thats how i have been able to tell.)Travis Munroe

at the moment mine are wowing around 110kmh so im not 'overly' concerend at the mo but htey are bloody expensive to get replaced.Eric..

Has anyone done these themselves, mine just started to hum the other day and i had a CV shaft replaced about a month ago so i picked up a set, 104 bucks and i figure it should be a pretty simple job, but then again ive never had the wheel off this car yet haha.2001 Jetta Wolfsburg Edition, APR 91/93, K&N Cold Air

Wheel bearings are not a simple job without the right tools. A hydraulic press makes it a lot easier though.Name: Brent

OK I think my wheel bearings are going. Does this sound right?????? when there is no load on the wheels (no acceleration or braking) I hear a grumbling coming from the front, but no vibration while accelerating. 80 000 km and i'm lowered 1.5" and have wheel spacers.2003 Jetta GLI VR6

wheel bearings going are typical a droning noise often worse when going around corners as that puts uneven load on them but you shouldnt hear any persistant grumbling normally (is it saying things like, your going too fast, i hate a calgary roads, do you know how hard it is on me in the calgary winters).
Typically also you can find a speed range where wheel bearings sound mcuh worse than normal when they are going.Last edited by Kordain; 08-02-2008, 08:14 PM.Eric..

if it's the same side as the cv shaft it could be a loose outer joint nut.
not many people realize torque is critical.
DON'T ROLL THE CAR WITH THE SHAFT OUT OF IT!!!!
it splits the bearing.
