  • Resonator delete?

    Hey guys,
Already searched youtube, the 'Tex, golfmkv.com, etc....and I am seriously contemplating this ghetto mod to my MkV GTI....

Just cutting out the resonator (and retaining it so I can return my baby to stock should I flip it for something else when the lease is up) seems like a nice cheap mod that can keep my modding bug sated till I have free $$$ once my stupid wedding is done and over with.

Does anyone on here have a MkV without a resonator? The youtube clips suck because the sound quality gets butchered when converted into an flv file....

Otherwise I may need to leave my candy white baby stock...
I gotta take my car in for its first service so I was thinking I might as well go see George and get him to chop it out at the same time hahahahhaha.....

    Thanks guys,
    Ken

If you want to meet somewhere, i had the res taken out and then new piping through the back into a new muffler ( 01 1.8t jetta ) so it had the turn down tips prior. It is fairly loud but sounds great, its not ricey at all.

I had my resonator taken out. I have a 01 1.8T with a magnaflow catback exhaust. There is a much deeper sound without the resonator. I like it. The only thing I notice is a little bit more backfire.

good bye warranty. as soon as you delete the Cat or resonating components your warranty is toast. check into that. my buddy had to replace his transmission out of pocket on a 2007 Audi A4 lemon after he threw on a test pipe

thats because he was stupid enough to let the dealer piitb

a cat/downpipe was absolutley 0% to do with a transmission

on topic.. on my old jetta 1.8t with a brullen exhaust the center resonator cracked so i had minute muffler weld in a straight pipe.. it made it a bit louder but sounded fine

on a stock exhaust.. hrmm.. probably not a good thing to do

            Re: Resonator delete?

VWOC can keep their warranty on the exhaust components! If it rusts in the 4 years I have the car I will walk away and never buy a VW again. And I'd like to see them void the warranty on the powertrain for removing the resonator.

The only thing I worry about is that it will sound like utter crap (yes I am being cheap, but if its worth it, its a nearly free mod )...I cannot justify spending a couple hundred or more on a 2.5" exhaust when the 2.0TFSI's stock exhaust already IS already a 2.5" stainless steel one...I just want more sound but I'm being a cheapa$$....

Thanks guys for the offers, unfortunately the 1.8T is an entirely different sounding animal than the 2.0TFSI (I used to run an un-resonated stock exhaust, then a custom 2.5" with two resonators and a straight thru muffler on my old A4)....from what the youtube vids show, its raspy, even fartier than the stock exhaust (which is pretty damn farty) and apparently self-destructs camera phone mic's....

Heh, nothing like a little guess and test!

thanks guys! Pretty much the only way to know if I'll like it is if I do it and try to live with it. Expect a post in a couple of weeks about how I hated it and put it back in....both me and the mrs. are picky as hell ha!

I had a full turbo back on my GTI.. put in at the VW dealer. I dont have to remind you what they tried to pull.

The dealers all say its cool until things start to break, then there like oh sorry, not under warranty. Your AC could break, and they would try to blame it on the missing resonator.

Ugh, I remember the saga you went thru....
How did that end up? Did your MkV get fixed or did they give you a new one or what?

actually they said and justified that the downpipe produced excess strain on the transmission due to the extra power figures produced by it. My friend sent a formal letter of complaint drafted by a lawyer to Audi and they actually backed up Glenmore.

                      I hate Glenmore Audi

Sweet. Think I found my answer. Keep the resonator. Delete the suitcase muffler.

well from my knowledge on the b5 s4 as most aftermarket exhausts have dual mufflers one center and one rear

everyone removes the rear muffler and leaves the center resonator/muffler on (and these are people modding aftermarket systems not stock)
because it'll drone like made if you do the middle they say

                            AH! No wonder...!
I was blown away by the fact that leaving the resonator in and removing the muffler was so different in sound...removing the resonator sounded like crap in the vids and removing the muffler sounds WAY better...and the people that have done it (on the Tex and mkvgolf) say there's no drone on the hwy!
