Phaeton opinions

My dad is looking at a 04 phaeton, just wondering what people think about them. How reliable are they? are they expensive to maintain and everything? Asking a couple people they say that they are like an A8 but people don't like them because of the vw badge...

So let the opinions fly!

well they are an A8 basically but i'd personally just buy the A8 or an S6

Amazing cars, low resale but it's still a 100K car when it comes to maintenance scheds. A few owners on vortex that could afford many other "name-badge" cars swear by the phaeton.

Deadly car about 2 grand a year to maintain off warranty depending on mileage.
this is broken up after 5 years.

Except that they weigh close to a 1/4 more than an A8...

Good !/$ for a luxury car - but they weigh over 2.5 tons!

But that's because it has "four rings" on the front.

I don't know much about them but I keep looking at them on ebay, man can you get them for cheap. I'd just be concerned about the maintainability in the long term due to the fact that they only ran a couple years and are now discontinued.

hahaha jason.. nah i'd just buy the A8.. does the phaeton have alcantara doors and headliner? i've never driven or rode in one so i dunno.. i have been in a new A8 tho.. that thing was freaking amazing!

HOLY CRAP you can get them on ebay for 20-35gs! that really hurts!! resale is brutal! for that price yes i'd but the phaeton then!

why is maintenance so much on them? its just the audi 4.2 no?

Thats crazy maintenance...he's coming from the saab so its not like he doesn't know about maintence and expensive parts. He keeps looking at them and some similar bmws. I just hope he makes a decision sometime soon

Honestly I never understood why Phaetons have such a high Price tag they are so ordinary There is a Phaeton near my brothers house and it just looks so...... normal to be honest I don't understand the $100,000 price tags on this car. I would say go for the Lexus GS 450h man that is one sweet hybrid and with gas prices your dad will be happy.

He's still up in the air over what he wants. He isn't dedicated to any brand now it seems. As for gas prices...he makes more money when oil prices are high haha so I dont think he really matters.

You need to get the W12 - it would make up for the extra weight...

The last time I searched in the US for one - it was easy to find W12's under $40K. I suspect they'd be even cheaper now...

This car was VW flexing its engineering muscle to ramp up for the challenge of the century... the Bugatti Veyron.

Also, have you ever driven a GS450h? Garbage. Torque-steer from hell, and you cannot disengage the traction control (unless it's a special-handshake kind of trick). Then there's the terrible quality of the interior. Every day that I worked at Lexus of Calgary there was a GS or LS (not to mention an few IS cars) in the shop for 'fit and finish' warranty issues = squeaks and rattles in the dash or non-operating seat warmers/coolers... on a > $70,000 car! The Golf has better fit and finish!
