  • Turbo Fooked?

Ok, so today I was driving around town. My foot was light on the gas. Then all of the sudden there awas this big soft pop noise, and its like I took my foot off the gas. I was driving home and I noticed there is now a whistle when my turbo is supposed to boost. I also have no power being produced from the turbo, so it seems.
The start up is also really rough now as well, and when it shifts from 1st to 2nd its like I took my foot of the gas.
Im not to sure what it could be. Im thinking either a vaccum line, or the turbo itself?
    Can anyone help me?
    Thanks

Sounds like maybe a vaccum leak or a boost leak.

Go underneath your car on the passenger side front corner, where you intercooler is located. Have a look and see if the boost pipes on either side of the intercooler are loose or popped off. Its a common item on 1.8Ts and will show pretty well the exact symptoms you are decribing.

i would check for leaks before you pull the turbo off. if you blow the turbo you usually hear chunks of metal go crunch crunch crunch

my car did the exact same thing when i blew a boost hose. the whistlng is probably the boosted air coming out of the gap between the hose and the fitting.
as per RONDAL, you generally know when a turbo goes.

Ill have a look at it tomorrow then (Grad night tonight).
Paul at Bert and Jacks said the same thing. It goes in for work next thursday.
Thanks for the help. Ill let you know what I find tomorrow.
Is it safe to drive until I get it fixed up? I dont want to messing anything up further.

Edit: Would this also cause it to start up rough?

yes it would be rough as there all the air will not make it to the intake manifold. Its definatley a boost leak.

Would it be ok to drive it into Calgary from Didsbury so I can get this problem fixed up?

You can fix it on your own, I wouldnt drive that far as it will suck in unfiltered air. Jack your car up and follow the inter cooler piping. if its a loud hissing you will spot the problem easy.

Look at the left of the diagram, it shows how the piping runs from the turbo to the intercooler to the intake manifold.

All fixed up now! I think I may need a new clamp however. The job didnt take to long. I did discover that I do have a tranny leak though
